Mrs. Nellie Wilhite was dismissed from Gibson General Hospital to her home on Monday. Mrs. Ruth Spindler entertained on Monday afternoon with a birthday party in honor of observing her 90th birthday. Leroy English and Marc Robinson spent the weekend in Pontiac, Mich. enroute home they were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Delane Robinson, Danny and Sherry at their home in Muskegon, MI. Mr. and Mrs. Russ Madden and family were in W. Lafayette over the weekend and visited with their son Kenny at Purdue University. Mrs. Helen Goode of Cleveland, TN, is here visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Jones. Mrs. Jones is a patient at Gibson General Hospital. Cathy Lynn Dilbeck reigned as the first Football Queen at Haubstadt High School on Friday, October 6. Coronation ceremo- nies were held prior to the game between the Petersburg Indians and The Big Blue. Queen Cathy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William A. Dilbeck, was lovely in a white knit long skirt and sweater ensemble, a Youth Guild fash- ion. She was escorted by the Co-Captains, Randy Sollman and Chris May. Randy placed the dainty tiara upon her long dark tresses and Chris presented her with an arm bouquet of red roses. To make the evening complete Haubstadt's Big Blue won their first game since entering football competition as they defeated the Indians 14-6. Births: To Mr. and Mrs Robert Purcell, of Fort Branch, a daughter, Jacquelyn DeAnne on October 5. Marriages: Janice Marie Meyer and Brian Taylor Blanford wed on Friday, September 22, at Sts. Peter and Paul Church of Haub- stadt. Deaths: Tillie Elpers, 70, passed away Friday at Welborn Baptist Hospital. 45 YEARS AGO Fort Branch Times Friday, Oct. 14, 1977 Garry Armstrong was one of 348 new lawyers admitted to the Indiana Bar on Octo- ber 11, following successful completion of the recent Indiana Bar Exam. Formal swearing in ceremonies were held a the State Supreme Court in Indianapolis. Garry is the son of Phyl- lis Armstrong and the late Bill Armstrong. A 1970 graduate of Owensville High School, he attended Purdue University for two years and received his B.S. in accounting from Indi- ana University in 1974. He recently completed requirements for a Juris Doctor degree from the School of Law and a Master of Business Administration in finance from the Gradu- ate School of Business, both at the Indiana University campus in Bloomington. Myrna Reynolds, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Travis Reynolds, can be seen on Channel 9 on Tuesday, Oct. 18 in the French opera, "Manon." In the production starring Beverly Sills and Henry Price, Miss Reynolds plays the part of a simple, barefoot "goose girl" in the first act. In the second act, she is a perfume vendor. She appears in a magnificent costume and white wig in the last act as the co-owner of a gambling casino. The opera is conducted by Julius Rudell of the New York City Opera. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Mansfield of Nashville, Tenn., were the weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Tretter. The Mansfields are former residents of Fort Branch. Mrs. Mary Ruth Casey of Silver Springs, FL, has been the houseguest of Mr. and Mrs. John Vic DeLong. Mrs. Casey and Mrs. DeLong were roommates at Stevens College and have not seen one another for 30 years. Houseguests of Mrs. Ralph Emge were Mr. and Mrs. Gary Leips of Anderson and their children, Keely and Michelle. Michelle was celebrating her 10th birthday. Mrs. Gail LeGrange was released to he home over the weekend for continued conva- lescence following several weeks of treatment and tests at Deaconess Hospital. Mrs. Delores Anderson was admitted to St. Mary's Hospital on Monday and under- went surgery on Tuesday. She is recovering satisfactorily. Deaths: Louis Oexmann, 76, of Prince- ton, passed away Oct. 8 at Gibson General Hospital. 35 YEARS AGO Fort Branch Times Thursday, Oct. 15, 1987 The Gibson Southern Girls Cross Coun- try Team earned their third consecutive Big 8 Championship victory on Saturday. Elaine Spindler won her third Big 8 title in record time. She toured the course with the time of 12:19.8. Three Lady Titan runners finished with Big 8 honors. They were Elaine Spindler 1, Tara Elpers 4, and LeeAnn Jones 8. The top nine finishers made All Conference. Round- ing out the good team effort were Audra Mayer 10, Carla Mayer 12, Laura Neufelder 22 and Laura Mayer 26. The boys team finished third in the Big 8 meet. Running for the Titans were Rick Schmitt11, David Higginbotham 13, Mark Schmitt 14, John Anthis 18, Mark Spindler 22, Mike Kyle 45 and Jim Wright 49. This was the Titans best finish in Big 8 Cross Country. Stan Spindler won the freshmen race with the time of 16:04. Mrs. Hannelore Overton announces the engagement of her daughter, Mary Lou, to Roger E. Padgett. The prospective bride- groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. Padgett of Washington. The father of the bride-elect is the late Malcolm E. Overton. Mrs. Ruth Moncrief of LaPlata, MO, recently visited her sister and family, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Wilson. She also spent time with her mother, Mrs. Macy Stone, a resi- dent of Owensville Convalescent Center. The Wilsons accompanied her home and remained for a few days visit. Mrs. Julia LeMaire of Tell City, Mrs. Rebecca Rickenbaugh of Lamar and Mrs. Elsie McDaniel of Bristow, accompanied by Mrs. Alma Hacker went to mt. Carmel on Monday to visit Mrs. Enola Moeller, Mrs. Mary K. Rigg and Mrs. Florence Leek. Also joining the women were Mrs. Fernleah Lanman and Mrs. Jackie Goehemour of Allen- dale, IL. Returning Fort Branch, several rela- tives visited in the Hacker home with them. Deaths: Geraldine M. Smith, 81, of Fort Branch, passed away on Oct. 13; Helen Louise Houston, 62, of Princeton, passed away on Oct. 9. 25 YEARS AGO South Gibson Star-Times Tuesday, Oct. 14, 1997 Gibson Southern finished with the first and third-place teams competing in the Indian Creek Soil Judging Contest Oct 4 in John- son County. About 18 teams from 10 schools competed in the event hosted by Indian Creek High School in Trafalgar and sponsored by the Johnson County Soil and Water Conser- vation District. The contest was located just north of Brown County State Park. Titans Andy Lowry, T.J. Jochim, Brandon Mann and Mark Sollman were on the first-place team. Lowry compiled 429 out of 500 possi- ble points to finish third individually. Matt Michel of Gibson Southern place fifth individ- ually with 424 points. The third-place Titan team consisted of Ryan McKinney, Lyndsey Neidigh and Michel. Gibson Southern earned a Division I rating and won Class C of the Indiana State School of Music Association District marching bank contest Oct. 4 at Jasper. The Marching Titans also won Best Music, Best Visual, Best General Effect and Best Auxiliary in Class C of the district contest. Duane Marks, a resident of Fort Branch has been elected President of the junior class at Saint Joseph's College. He will serve his term through the 1997-98 academic year. Each class elects four officers who are responsible for representing the class and planning events. Dr. John L. Emmerson of Indianapolis and Calvin Emmerson of Martinsville were recent visitors of Mrs. Eugenia Hudelson. Mrs. Hudelson is home recuperating from a broken shoulder. Mrs. Tim Tichenor and Rebecca and Mrs. Tom Maurer and daughter visited Allison Maurer at Wabash Valley College in Illinois Sunday. Mrs. Ruth Deal was scheduled for surgery at Welborn Hospital Wednesday morning. Mrs Kathleen Hurt was called to Seattle to attend the funeral of her daughter-in-law, Olga Stahla. Mrs. Grace Newcome is now a resident of the Owensville Convalescent Center after having surgery at St. Mary's.
