LOCAL A-4 Tuesday, September 13, 2022 South Gibson Star-Times Comedian Carolyn Agnew told humorous stories about work Friday night at the South Gibson VFW post. She had lost her job that week, and had agreed to perform for free. The post actually took up a collec- tion to pay for her time. County looks at two new positions By Janice Barniak Star-Times Editor editor@sgstartimes.com Gibson County Commis- sioners discussed hiring for two new positions in their regular meeting Sept. 6. As the county spends more and more on contracts for IT ser vice, they dis- cussed hiring an in-house IT consultant. Hiring a county engineer, the board agreed had saved the county money, and the commissioners believe be- tween what they spend with BCS and Parrish Consulting they might come out ahead hiring a person who would be onsite. Commissioners say they've noticed someone is out to help with IT at county sites almost ever y day. "I think this needs to be- come a discussion with the council. They're doing the budget right now...it's been turned down in the past. But we're spending more and more ever y year," said Com- missioner Mar y Key. "We're not going to get one for $15 an hour." They thought it wouldn't necessarily eliminate what they spend with contractors but they aren't sure. Auditor Mike Watkins said the county would likely need IT and IT assistant to cover the work. "I don't know if one person can handle the whole coun- ty," Watkins said. He added he's been happy with the quick responses from Par- rish. The other position the commissioners are consid- ering is an owner's repre- sentative to oversee recent constr uction. The county has a new of fice building, a mag- istrate room, safety up- grades and ADA com- pliance upgrades at the cour thouse all under con- str uction over the next 12-18 months at costs ap- proaching $3 million in upgrades. They want to hire someone on contract (not full-time) to oversee the projects for the coun- ty. "I think we need to do this. We've obviously had some problems on the construction that is under way now," said Key, who moved to approve it contingent upon finding funding. VFW Fundraising Event Headlining comedian and veteran Vernon "Longhorn" Davis joked that when he put Fort Branch into his GPS it asked "On purpose?" and wondered if he was in the witness relocation program. Davis travels the countr y with his veteran comedy act as part of a non-profit that recognizes the ser vice of Vietnam veterans.
