B-2 Tuesday, September 13, 2022 South Gibson Star-Times Lady Titans golf adds two wins By Andy Heuring Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Gibson Southern's golf team picked up two more wins last week as they beat Forest Park 184-231 on Thursday and Evansville Central earlier in the week 169-227. Gibson Southern broke 170 as a team against Ev. Central on Fendrich course in Evans- ville as Vanessa Schmitt shot a 37 on the back nine for the Titans. Schmitt birdied the par 4 12th hole to help her score. Haley Hughes shot a 40 that included a birdie on the par 5 10th. Katelyn Walker and Mad- ilyn Sperling both shot 46. Walker had a birdie on the 17th hole. Adr yauna Redden had a 49. On Thursday, Gibson Southern hosted Forest Park and won by 47 shots on the back nine at Cambridge. Sperling had the low score for Gibson Southern with a 44. Hughes posted a 45, Schmitt a 46 and Walker a 49. Redden added a 51. Titan tennis sweeps S. Spencer 5-0 By Andy Heuring Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Gibson Southern's boys ten- nis team swept South Spencer 5-0 on Thursday as they lost only six games in 10 sets of ten- nis. Titan Jake Decker at number one singles won 6-1, 6-1 over Cole Wheatley, while number two singles player Landon Kie- sel cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win. Eliott Church won 6-1, 6-0 at number three singles over Bry- er Coomes for the Titans. In number one singles, John and Noah Kiesel beat Aaron Abler and Briten Gee 6-1, 6-2. At number two singles the Titan pair of Grant Wade and Lucas Church beat Zach Hamilton and Beau Heck 6-0, 6-2. Haley Hughes sized up a putt during competition against Forest Park last Thursday. The Titans won 184-231. Madylin Sperling hit a great shot on a ball that was up against 18-in high lip of the bunker on hole 11. She hit the ball nearly pin high just right of the green and held the damage to a bogey. Vanessa Schmitt hits a wedge shot from about 60 yards on hole 11 at Cambridge last Thursday. The Lady Titans beat Forest Park 184- 231 in the meet. Titan tennis falls to North Daviess By Andy Heuring Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Gibson Southern's boys tennis team dropped a match to North Daviess 4-1 on Saturday. Eliott Church at number three singles was the only Titan to win his match. Church beat senior Brycen Skinner 6-3, 6-4. Landon Kiesel at number two singles lost a hard-fought three- set match to the Cougars' Blake Huff 6-3, 1-6 and 4-6. The Titans number two dou- bles team of Grant Wade and Lu- cas Church also fell in three sets to Cam Sassano and Max Toy. After losing the opening set, 6-0 Wade and Church rallied to win 6-4 in the second set, but the lost their momentum and fell 6-2 in the deciding third set. Gibson Southern's Jake Deck- er at number one singles lost 6-0, 6-4 to Jaylen Mullen and at num- ber one doubles John and Noah Kiesel fell to Colin Kimep and Brecklin Bryer 6-1, 6-2. Titan boys beat Princeton in tennis By Andy Heuring Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Gibson Southern's tennis team posted a 3-2 victor y over Princeton on Tuesday that had two three-set matches and another with a tiebreaker. "The guys fought really hard tonight. There were many chances for the match to go either way. We look for ward to learning from this match to prepare for the next one," said Titan Coach Kyle Debord. Kiesel brothers John and Noah at number one doubles won a three-set match against Eli Kruse and Dillan Firkins 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. Grant Wade and Lucase Church at number two dou- bles picked up a point for the Titans by beating Corbin Mor rison and Colton Hill 6-2, 6-3. Landon Kiesel at number two singles got the Titans' third point, beating Liam Stone 7-6 in the first set that was decided by a 7-4 tiebreak- er. Kiesel took care of busi- ness in the second set, win- ning 6-2. Eliott Church at number three singles lost a hard- fought three-set match. He opened by winning the first set 6-3, but then lost 7-5 in the second set and 6-4 in the third. In junior varsity action, Luke Stoll beat Conner Davis 6-1, and Sam Parmer beat Da- vis 6-0. Wyatt Kruse and Landon Schmitt won their doubles match 6-1, while Dylan Bolton and Kleton Luding won 6-3.
