Volleyball 10-5 after big week By Andy Heuring Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Gibson Souther n's volley- ball team is now 10-5 after a big week. The girls won matches in the Evansville Central Invitational on Sat- urday and lost a hotly con- tested match to Jasper on Thursday. Saturday, Gibson South- er n beat Pike Central, Per- r y Central and Evansville Central 2-0. Thursday they played a tough match against Jas- per and lost 3-0, but all the games were close. The indi- vidual game scores at Jas- per were 25-21, 25-23 and 25-15. "This team is scrappy. They react quickly, so our defense is fast, and then fol- lowed up by a strong front row. We r un a 6-2 of fense and both setters do a great job. We r un them out of the back row allowing us to have three hitters at the net at all times. Outside hitters are sophomore Laur yn Ad- amson and freshman Loren Carl. Middle hitters are ju- niors Abby Deal and Maken- na T ur ner. Rightside hitters are seniors R ylee Johnson and Alexis T ucker. Setters are Juniors Gabby Smitha and Briley Edwards," said T itan Coach Emily Schmitt. "We do not have a libero. Our setters sub in the back row for our middles. We are a ver y strong blocking team on the right side which helps slow down the oppos- ing teams' strong hitters," said Schmitt. "We do str uggle at times with ser ve receive, but if we control that first touch we are unstoppable. Our record is 10-5 but on our losses, if you look at the scores, we were right with them head- to-head the entire way," said Schmitt.
