Titan tennis opens season with 3-2 win over South Knox By Andy Heuring Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Gibson Souther n boys tennis team star ted their season with a 3-2 win over South Knox on Saturday mor ning. The T itans used team depth to win the match as their three points came from number three singles and both doubles matches. All three had convincing wins. T itan Lucas Church at three singles won 6-2, 6-1 over Caleb Evans. Church had only 16 ground stroke er rors compared to his op- ponent's 30. He also had no double faults. The number one dou- bles team of Jake Decker and John Kiesel beat Noah Hayden and Tanner Hol- land by the same score, 6-2, 6-1. Decker and Kiesel were able to keep the ball in play with their ground strokes, and hammered the ball at the net. They only had 19 ground stroke er rors while combining for 26 winners at the net. Grant Wade and Noah Kiesel at number two dou- bles won easily, 6-1, 6-2 over South Knox's Evan Dreiman and Isaac True. Senior Vanessa Schmitt continues to have a strong golf season for the Titans. She had the team low score of 42. Junior Katelyn Walker was one stroke behind with a 43 that included the shot of the night. Walker, on hole 6 shot an eagle two on the par four hole. Senior Madeilyn Sperling, playing in her first match of the season, had a 45. Adr y- ana Redden in her first varsi- ty match and Haley Hughes both had 48s to round out the team score of 178. Titan cross country season opens with Hokum-Karem By Andy Heuring Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Gibson Southern opened their boys and girls cross countr y season with the Ho- kum Karem run and many of the best cross countr y run- ners in southern Indiana par- ticipated. The Hokum Karem is a two-person relay with each person running two 2K legs. Gibson Southern's top pair on the boys side was Hayden Pennington and Alex Spindler. They finished sixth with a time of 26:46. The overall winner in the boys race was the team of Swayer Mossberger and Jack- son Nolan of Evansville Reitz. They ran a 25:25 to win by five seconds over Evansville Cen- tral's Nolan King and Marc Pierre with a 25:30 in second place. Other Gibson Southern boys pairs were ninth place Cooper Maurer and Lucas Kiesel in a time of 27:17. Isaac Pohl and Johnathan Spindler finished in 25th at 29:43; Taylor Brundage and Lucian Wicker were 50th in 35:17, Aiden Loveless and Noah Wagener were 53rd in 36:12 and Owen Mercer and Ethan Spinder tags Hayden Pennington after competing the first leg of the season opening Hokum-Karem on Saturday. The two placed sixth in the boys division with a time of 26:46. Gibson Southern's Lucas Kissel runs his second lap in the Hokum Karem on Saturday. He and Cooper Maurer ran a time of 27:17, finishing in ninth in season opening meet.
