OPEN: TUESDAY-THURSDAY 4PM-8PM, FRIDAY & SATURDAY 4PM-9PM Titans have big shoes to fill By Mike Sandifar Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Gibson Southern High School Boys' Soccer Coach Josh Higgins just might have the toughest boys' soccer coaching spot in Indiana in 2022 After all, all the second-year GSHS Boys' Soccer Coach did as a first-year coach for the Titans was go undefeated in Pocket Athletic Conference (PAC) play and win the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) Washing - ton 3A Sectional en route to a 16-1 re- cord in 2021. The Titans fell to conference oppo- nent Heritage Hills in the Washington IHSAA 3A Regional Championship 2-0 (GSHS had defeated the Hatchets 1-0 in regular season action). Those accomplishments will be a hard act to follow by anyone under any cir - cumstance or standard, but the fact that the Titans lost nine seniors to graduation in May, including seven starters, four of whom were All-Conference performers, leaves some giant holes in the Gibson Southern Soccer Roster for 2022. The Titans gave up the fewest goals in the PAC in 2021, and the really good news is that Luke Appman, the Gibson Southern goalie is back for his senior season. Appman will be the team captain for the Titans this season, and Higgins is counting on his goalkeeper to provide leadership for a young overall team. "Five of our seven senior starters were attack players last year, which means we will be ver y young on the offensive side of the ball," confides Higgins. "I think we will again challenge for one of the top three spots in the conference, but our matches will be much closer this year than last season." "The PAC will be much more competi - tive this year, but I think we can compete with anyone in the conference." "I believe Washington, Heritage Hills, and us (Gibson Southern) will be the top three teams in the league, but we will need to play ver y well each time out if we hope to compete for a conference title. "We lost four All-Conference players in Isaac Defelice, Mosbah Alshwik, Jake Romerhausen, and Eric Hirsch, and each of those individuals will be ver y hard to replace on the field in terms of athletic ability and in their leadership on the sidelines and in the locker room." Higgins has 15 returning players from last season's 16-1 team on his 17- man roster. There are four seniors, six juniors, five sophomores, and two fresh - men. The Titans have high hopes for the 2022 soccer campaign with the solid group of 15 returnees and the addition of a pair of talented freshmen on the squad, but then, the expectations are go - ing to be ver y high as well.
