D-3 Tuesday, August 16, 2022 South Gibson Star-Times 50 YEARS AGO Fort Branch Times Friday, August 18, 1972 Superintendent Ralph Kifer an- nounces the appointment of a six new teachers in the South Gibson School Corporation for the school year 1972-1973. They are as follows: Donald Crane will be teaching Art and is the Football Coach at Haub- stadt High School. He is a graduate of Memorial High School, Evans- ville, and has a B.S. from the Uni- versity of Evansville in 1971. While in college he was All Indiana Colle- giate Conference Halfback. Crane replaces Gary Heyde and is single. Alan Hopewell will be head Bas- ketball Coach at Owensville High School and will teach English. He graduated from Washington High School and attended Vincennes University and Grand Canyon Col- lege in Arizona. He received a B.S. from Indiana State University in 1971. As a teacher he replaces Don Stansberry who transferred to Fort Branch High School to replace Mrs. Judy Phillips who resigned. Donna Jean Foster will be teach- ing third grade at Owensville School replacing Noble Hart who resigned. She is an Owensville High School graduate of 1968 and received her B.S. from Indiana State University in 1972. She is married to Tom Fos- ter. David Schaefer will teach Span- ish and English at Fort Branch High School replacing Sherry Barth who resigned. He was a 1947 graduate of Freeport, IL and served many years in the U. S. Navy. Schaefer received his A. B. degree in 1972 He is single. Terry Tichenor has been as- signed to teach Biology at Haub- stadt High School replacing Edna Brumfield who is moving to El Paso, T X. He is a 1963 graduate of Owens- ville High School and received a B. S. from Oakland City in 1967 and M. A. from University of Evansville in 1972. Tichenor has taught five years, the last three years in the Evansville School System. He is married and they are the parents of one child. Richard Harder will teach the fourth grade at Marlette to fill a Marlette Faculty vacancy created by the retirement of Olivia Hollis. He is a graduate of Dubois High School and received an A. B. degree in 1968 from Purdue University. Mr. Harder has taught for four years, the last three being in the Indianap- olis School system. He is married and they have one child. Michael Bertram is returning to South Gibson School Corporation after a year's leave of absence for Graduate Study at the University of Wyoming. He will teach Math at Fort Branch High School replacing Carl Fowler who resigned. Marriages: Lynne Showers and Rick Coffey were wed on August 10 at the Neu Chapel at the University of Evansville. Deaths: Fred W. Brokaw, 83, of Fort Branch, passed away Monday Gibson General Hospital. Myrtle Douglas, 91, of Fort Branch, passed away Monday at the Owensville Convalescent Center. Mrs. Roy Wright, of Akron, Ohio, passes away August 12. Wayne (Buck) Buchanan, 67, of Patoka, passed away Saturday while at work at Kings Station Mine. 45 YEARS AGO Fort Branch Times Friday, August 19, 1977 The York Division of Bore-War- ner Corp. announces the appoint- ment, within the engineered ma- chinery air conditioning marketing organization, of Larry K. Cunning- ham who has been named market- ing manager of air conditioning. He will be responsible for all domestic engineered machinery marketing products and pricing activities. Lar- ry is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Cunningham of Fort Branch and a graduate of Rose Hulman Institute with a degree in Civil Engineering. Larry lives in York, PA., with his wife, Dana, and three children. Peabody Coal Company, St. Lou- is, MO, has promoted Donald J. Wilzbacher to Manager of Environ- mental Studies in the Environmen- tal Quality Department of Peabody. The announcement was made by W.D. Humphrey, Vice President, Operations Support Group. Wilz- bacher will be responsible for con- ducting environmental studies re- quired for opening new mines, as well as obtaining permits for exist- ing mines. Included in his area of re- sponsibility will be the preparation of Environmental Impact Assess- ments. He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biology from the Uni- versity of Evansville; Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Health Sciences from Indiana State and received his Masters Degree in Industrial Hygiene from Wayne State University in Michigan. He joined Peabody Coal Company in 1975 as an Environmental Engineer with assignments in the Environ- mental Quality Department and the Federal Coal Leasing Task Force. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Wilzbacher of Fort Branch. Births: To Mr. and Mrs. Steven MacArthur, a daughter, Krystal D. Michele, Saturday, August 7; To Mr. and Mrs. Scott Dearing of Owens- ville, a son, Joshua Lee, Saturday, August 13. Marriages: Cynthia L. Kiesel and Joseph J. Effinger were wed Saturday, August 13 at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Haubstadt. Deaths: Antonette Elpers, 86, of Poseyville, passed away Saturday at Deaconess Hospital. 35 YEARS AGO Fort Branch Times Thursday, August 20, 1987 The sixth annual 9 and 10 year old Fort Branch Invitational Tour- ney was completed on Wednes- day, August 12. The Haubstadt Red Team won the tourney for the second time. Haubstadt advanced through the losing bracket by de- feating Petersburg, North Posey, in extra innings, and then had to beat Yellow Banks twice to claim their first place trophies. Winners of championship game prizes were: Angela McGrew and Rita Staggs. $50 savings accounts from Perma- nent Federal; and Tom Adams the $50 savings bond from Farmers and Merchants Bank. Paul McIntyre won the yard barn donated by B & P Lumber and Home Center, Inc. The four winner of autographed Don Mattingly baseballs were Greg Lear, Steven Lintzenich, Jeremy Holtzclaw and Jeremey Stuckey. Shawn McCammon was the lucky winner of the Pepsi New Generation 2000 bicycle given away on Monday, August 17, at Norman's Finer foods. Shawn is the son of Robin McCam- mon. He is the son of Robert and Scena Cleveland of Owensville. Marriages: Tona Lee Mont- gomery and Timothy Wayne Smith were wed on Saturday, August 15, at the Fort Branch United Methodist Church. 25 YEARS AGO South Gibson Star-Times Tuesday, August 19, 1997 Earlier this year a South Gibson community made its first official ap- pearance on an Indiana map. Snake Run officially appeared on the In- diana map on January 1, 1997. The Indiana Department of Transporta- tion placed the Snake Run signs on State Road 168 on August 7, 1997. Long time Snake Run resident and Gibson Southern teacher Marlene Obert spearheaded efforts to have Snake Run placed on the Indiana map. She contacted the INDOT map department and talked to John Jackson about the issue. Obert was instructed by INDOT officials to write a letter asking for the commu- nity to be placed on the state map and provide a copy of the plat map to show its proposed location on the map. "They accepted it because it (Snake Run) was an old, established community," Obert added. "Every- one ( in the Snake Run community) has always wanted it (placed on the state map)." Obert described Snake Run as a "thriving community" with a lot of "good farm land." She has re- sided in the Snake Run community all of her life in the same house. In fact, she said that house will be 100 years old next year. "I think we are a progressive community," Obert said in referring to Snake Run. "We definitely have gone forward." "Snake Run is a farming commu- nity. We are proud of our area. And we are thrilled to get a sign to pro- vide identity." The Owensville-Montgomery Township Fire Protection District responded to a barn fire in rural Owensville sometime between 5:45 p. m. to 6 p. m. Thursday, august 14, according to authorities. Rick Alm- on, fire department assistant chief, said the barn fire happened one mile south of Johnson on the Bill Kenneth Mauck property located at Route 1, Owensville. Mauck resides in Poseyville, Almon said the barn was a total loss. No injuries resulted from the barn fire, but one fireman was overcome with heat, according to Almon. "The fire was started by careless burning of trash," Almon said. Although there was no live- stock in the barn, There were sever- al other items there. In fact, Almon said a 1982 or 1983 Ford Ranger pickup and a John boat in the barn were both a total loss. Almon also said a trailer in the barn sustained extensive damage. Firemen were on the scene of the fire for about three hours, Almon said. He also men- tioned the Poseyville and Cynthiana fire departments provided mutual aid by transporting water. DeVault, 57, of Fort Branch, passed away Friday, August 8, Deaconess Hospital; No- ble "Jim" Deal, 83, of Owensville, passed away August 8, at Wel- born Baptist Hospital; Clarence A. Kruse, 82, of Fort Branch, passed away Tuesday, August 12, at Owens- ville Convalescent Center; Thomas E. Groves, 74, of Evansville, passed away Tuesday, August 12, at Willow Park Retirement Village.
