The course is offered in a hybrid format, with self-paced online reading and weekly in-person classes. Volunteers receive 40 hours of education from the local horticulture agent. Topics cov- ered include vegetables, fruits, botany, propagation soil, land- scape design, turf, weeds, in- sects and disease, etc. Upon graduating from the course, interns are responsible for fulfi lling 40 hours of volunteer service their fi rst year, and 20 volunteer hours and 10 con- tinuing education hours in sub- sequent years. Many volunteer opportunities exist within the group providing something for everyone. Edu- cating farmers market patrons on Saturday mornings, school students in the classroom or outside at their gardens, Cleveland County Fair visitors, and other community projects are just a few of the volunteer options. Field trips to gardens throughout the state are part of the activities the group does together. Monthly meetings are held, consisting of inter- esting speakers, old and new business, and opportunities for fellowship amongst members. The course is offered once a year. The 2022 course be- gins on August 18 th and wraps up November 3 rd . In-person classes are on Thursdays from 4:30-6:00pm at the County Extension offi ce, 130 S. Post Road, Shelby.
