Readings for June 19— The Devil is alive and well After ever y mass shooting, they focus a significant amount of news broadcast time on guns and guns and guns. The same choir sings the same song after ever y mass shoot- ing. If we can do away with guns, this will curb violence. In the same breath, they convenient- ly sing most shooters are white supremacists and racists. The question never asked or addressed is which came first; the chicken or the egg? Newspaper articles, politicians, TV talking heads, and the man on the street all say these shootings are evil. The news media trots out their experts and they talk about evil. They encourage parents to discuss "evil" with their children. They spend hours of broadcast time talking about evil this and evil that, but never about the source of evil! Where does it originate? How can we get a handle on it? Is it a force? Is it a psychiatric disorder? Could there be a devil? Is it in the water? When was the last time you heard about Sa- tan or the devil? Satan has been characterized as a medieval church invention used to scare people into the church. Many Christians agree as they see nothing wrong with kids dress- ing up in Satan's costumes and celebrating Halloween with haunted houses sponsored by their church. They portrayed Satan as comical and harmless. Music praises him. People tattoo devilish symbols on their body and call it art. I've had church members proudly boast to me they don't believe in the devil as if their pronouncement carries authority. It doesn't! Getting lost in Bicknell Last week we filled in at Bethany General Baptist in Bicknell Indiana. It is defintly a beautiful church, but they have only a hand full of people attending and the ones who attend are ver y faithful. Bicknell is a amaller community and is full of great folks. They can give you directions but the streets do a strange tur n and if you don't watch while you are driving you can end up on a dif ferent street. It has happened to us three times now ,but we seem to always stumble around until we come upon the church. It doesn't seem as though any of our churches can attract younger people to take the place of the ones we are losing to get- ting older. The churches that are sur viving well are the bigger churches who can of fer basketball and other such things to draw the children. Lately many are of fering breakfast and other amenities. I'm not sure how to feel about this, but I suppose if the church can budget for these things and people are turning to the Lord we should be happy for them. Our local Lions Club is in planning stsge From a father to his son "Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus"(2 Timothy 2:1). As Paul prepared to leave this life, he longed to leave Timothy with a few parting instructions to encourage him in the faith. The apostle knew that his young friend was easily discouraged. Of course, some of the circumstances Timothy faced as he defended the faith would be enough to dishearten the most seasoned veteran of the Cross today (Acts 19:23-41 cf. 1 Timothy 1:2,3). Paul affectionately refers to Timothy as "my son." Although Timothy was not Paul's son in the flesh, the aged apostle had led him to the Lord; therefore, he was his son in the faith. As a result, there was a ver y special relationship between them. Timothy might have had ten thousand instructors in Christ, but he only had one spiritual father who loved him like a son. Thus, Paul challenges him to be strong in grace. Grace is God's unmerited favor toward those who are undeser ving.
