They would score three more in the fourth as Malone led off with a single and Fon- te drew a walk before Higgs' single drove both of them in and Tucker's single drove in Higgs for a 13-0 lead. Mt. Vernon scored in fourth inning and the Titans added another four, making it 18 -1 after four innings for 10 -run-rule win. Tucker threw three in- nings, giving up two hits and striking out five with no walks. Callie Dickerson pitched two innings, gave up two hits, struck out two and allowed no walks. TITANS EXPLODE FOR 10 RUNS IN FIRST INNING TO BEAT EV. MEMORIAL 18-0 Gibson Southern pounced on Evansville Memorial and decided the game in the first inning as they sent 14 batters to the plate, scoring 10 runs including a Brenna Blume three-run homer before the melee of an inning ended. Five batters batted twice in the inning. Long started the game with a single, Adamson walked and Blume, who was 3-for-3 with seven RBIs, dou- bled to bring them home. Money then doubled to drive in Blume for a 3-0. Malone flew out to first base, only giving a momen- tary pause to the onslaught. Fonte's single drove in Blume. Then Higgs, Tucker and Smith all were walked to bring in Fonte. Long drove the ball to left field for an out, but it brought home Higgs. Adamson loaded the bas- es, forcing Memorial's pitcher to have to deal with Blume's hot bat. She jacked a 3-0 pitch out of the park for 10 -0 lead. Blume would hit a two-run single in the third inning for her sixth and seventh RBI in the game. Monday went 4-for-4 with five RBIs. It would have been more but Blume wasn't leav- ing many on base for her to drive in. The Titans added five in the third inning and three more in the fourth inning be- fore the 10 -run-rule kicked in after four innings. Callie Dickerson pitched five innings, allowing five hits with no walks and three strikeouts for the win. South Gibson Star-Times Sports Tuesday, May 3, 2022 B-3 Titans fall to Rangers 9-0 Friday night Thompson pitches big win with Evansville Christian By Mike Sandifar Star-Times sports sports@sgstartimes.com Forest Park pitcher Clayton Weisheit was just too tough for the Gibson Southern batters at Gibson Southern Friday af- ternoon, as the Rangers beat the Titans 9 -0 in Pocket Ath- letic Conference (PAC) play. The host Titans commit- ted just one fielding error in the contest, while the Rang- ers did not commit an error in the well-played encounter. Forest Park scored a run in the top of the first inning, the only run needed by the Rang- ers, to take a 1-0 lead. The visitors came back in the top of the second inning to score another two runs to push their advantage to 3-0, then scored another run in the third frame to make the score 4-0. In the top of the fourth in- ning, the Rangers put five runs on the scoreboard to ac- count for the final 9 -0 score. Weisheit struck out 10 Ti- tans and walked two in his no- hit effort, while his teammates gave him ample support on the offensive side of the base- ball with eight hits, and four more Rangers reached base via walks to give Forest Park 12 runners in the contest en route to the visitors' nine runs. The loss left Gibson South- ern with an 8 -4 overall record, including a 3-4 PAC mark. The Titans played Evans- ville Christian on Saturday morning at Gibson Southern. By Mike Sandifar South Gibson Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Adam Thompson took the mound for the first time this season at Gibson Southern on Saturday morning, and the ju- nior hurler fired the baseball 65 times to home plate in the five innings he pitched to get a 5 -1 win over visiting Evans- ville Christian in a non-confer- ence high school baseball en- counter. Thompson allowed just two hits and one run in his five in- nings of work on the mound. He struck out seven Evans- ville Christian batters and walked just one. Thompson had been side- lined after undergoing "Tom- my John Surgery" in the off- season, and Thompson had not pitched this season. "Tommy John Surgery," a procedure in which a healthy tendon extracted from an arm (or sometimes a leg) is used to replace an arm's torn lig- ament. The healthy tendon is threaded through holes drilled into the bone above and below the elbow. The surgery is named after former Major League Base- ball Pitcher Tommy John of the Los Angles Dodgers. The medical name for the opera- tion is Ulnar Collateral Lig- ament Reconstruction. It is a procedure where the ulnar collateral ligament in the me- dial elbow is replaced with a tendon from elsewhere in the body. "We felt like Adam was ready to give it a try, and he a great job for us," smiled Gib- son Southern Coach Chris May after the game. "We set a 65 -pitch limit, and when he reached that point, we took him out of the game.' Gibson Southern scored one run in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead after one inning of play, and af- ter holding the Eagles score- less in the top of the second frame, the Titans pushed a pair of runs across the plate to take a 3-0 advantage after two innings of baseball. Evansville Christian tagged Thompson for the visitors' on- ly run of the contest to reduce the Titan lead to 3-1 in the top of the third, but Gibson South- ern came back with a run in the bottom of the third to put the hosts on top 4-1 after three innings. Neither team scored in the fourth or fifth frames, but the Titans pushed another run across the plate in the bottom of the sixth to account for the final 5 -1 score. Senior Noah Bryant re- lieved Thompson in the sixth inning, and Bryant did not al- low a run in his two innings on the mound. He struck out one batter and did not walk a hitter. Senior Kaden Hurless led the Titans at the plate with a pair of singles in two at bats, while junior Garrett Reid had two base knocks in three trips to the plate. Seniors Colton Okes, Oliver Hamilton, Bry- ant and Regan Farmer all had one hit in the fray, giving the winners eight hits on the day. The victory gave Gibson Southern a 9 -4 overall record, including a 3-4 mark in Pock- et Athletic Conference (PAC) play. The Titans play a full sched- ule this week, as Gibson Southern traveled to Evans- ville Central last night, and is scheduled to host confer- ence foe Pike Central tonight at Gibson Southern. Tomorrow, the Titans will travel to Boonville, and then to Huntingburg on Thursday for the week's third PAC match- up with Southridge. On Friday, Gibson Southern will again be on the road, tak- ing the bus to Mt. Carmel, Illi- nois, for a game with Mt. Car- mel High School. The five games in five days will be a tough challenge for the Gibson Southern pitching staff, but the return of Thomp- son will be a welcome addition to the grueling week of base- ball for the Titans.
