"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11 When Matthew and Lindsey Nix were married, they already knew that adoption would be part of their family plan. Matthew had been adopted at birth when his birth mother made the courageous decision to place him with a wonderful family. Aer their sons, Charlie and Mason, were born following difficult pregnancies, Matthew and Lindsey began the adoption process. Aer several years of waiting, they received the call in November of 2020 that Roman's birth mother wanted to entrust him to their care! She wanted him to have siblings and cousins and he got just that! He now has 2 brothers, 12 cousins, 4 grandparents, and 6 sets of aunts and uncles to love him! e whole Nix family is so grateful to his birth mother and can not imagine their lives without Roman! In Tuesday and Thursday's games they pummeled their opponents for 18 runs in each game, outscoring them 36 -1. Against Tecumseh, the Ti- tans erupted for three runs in the fourth inning to take control of the game 3-1 and Alexis Tucker pitched a gem from the mound, keeping the Braves off balance and only allowing two runs on 10 hits and one walk with three strikeouts. On the offensive side, Brenna Blume went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and a home run to lead the Titans. Tecumseh got on the board first when Ashtyn Green sin- gled to open the bottom of the second inning. Kaylee Johnson bunted her to sec- ond base and Taylor Ash hit a double to right field to score Green. But Gibson Southern an- swered in the top of the third. Lauryn Adamson led off with a single and Brenna Blume bashed one out of the park for a 2-1 lead. The Titan ral- ly didn't stop there. With one out Ally Malone hit a single and then advanced to third on passed balls before Em- maLee Higgs' single drover her in for a 3-1 lead. Tecumseh's Ash got a one- out double in the bottom of the fourth and two batters later, she scored on Allison Holder's double to make it 3-2. Gibson Southern add- ed an insurance run in the top of the seventh and Syd- ney Long led off with a sin- gle and was brought home by Blume's double for 4-2 lead. Tecumseh threatened in the bottom of the seventh when Karsyn Flowers led off with a single. Tucker got the first out of the inning on a fly ball to left field, then Flowers was out at second on a field- er's choice. Green singled to get a runner to third but a fly ball to right field ended the game. TITANS BEAT MT. VERNON 18-1 Gibson Southern host- ed Mt. Vernon on Tuesday and weren't very hospitable as they jumped on the Wild- cats and never let up, scoring in all five innings. Adamson and Blume drew one-out walks before Malone popped out to left field. Malone then singled to drive in Adamson and Taylor Fonte's single brought both Blume and Malone home for a 3-0 lead in the first. In the second, Tucker led off with a double and was driven in by Long. In the third inning the Ti- tans sent 11 batters to the plate to score seven runs that included a two-run homer by Olivia Money. Long, Adam- son, Higgs and Ryann Smith all had RBI singles in the in- B-1 Tuesday, May 3, 2022 South Gibson Star-Times See SOFTBALL on 3 See PATRIOTS on 2 Tennis adds 10th win at Pike Central By Andy Heuring South Gibson Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Gibson Southern's girls tennis team continues to roll. They added their 10th win Thursday night against Pike Central with another 5 -0 sweep of the Chargers. Gracia Jones won 6 -2, 6 -3 at number one singles over Jaime Sallee. At number two singles, Helen Kiesel beat Ella Mc- Guire 6 -0, 6 -0 and Sydney Purcell won 6 - 1, 6 -0 over the Chargers' Gabby Collins. The Lillies, Booth and Schmitt, were too much for Pike Central tandem at number one doubles. They won 6 -2, 6 -1. At number two doubles, Gabby Smitha and Maura Kluesner beat Lilian Mann and Eibhlin Teague 6 -1, 6 -0. In junior varsity matches, Hanna Robling and Vanessa Foster both lost one-set singles matches to Ashlyn Kirk of Pike Central; Robling 0 -6 and Foster 5 -6. Titans defeat Heritage Hills in 3-2 heart-stopper By Mike Sandifar South Gibson Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Despite getting outhit 7-6 and committing five errors, Coach Chris May's Gibson Southern Titans found a way to win against visiting Heri- tage Hills in a Pocket Athlet- ic Conference (PAC) game Thursday evening in a come- from-behind 3-2 heart-stop- per. The Titans, who opened the 2022 baseball season with a 7-0 mark, had dropped three straight outings (all PAC con- tests) going into Thursday's league encounter with the Pa- triots, and it looked as if the slide was going to continue, as the visitors led Gibson South- ern 2-0 heading into the bot- tom of the sixth inning. Senior Kaden Hurless opened the Titan half of the sixth inning with solid contact with the baseball, but the Pa- triot right fielder ran down the ball for the first out of the bot- tom half of the sixth for Gib- son Southern. That brought senior Oli- ver Hamilton to the plate for the Titans, and he hit a sharp ground ball to third that was scooped up and fired to first for out number two. With now two outs, and Gib- son Southern trailing 2-0, se- nior Levi Dickerson stepped to the plate for the hosts with all hopes of making "some- thing happen" resting on his shoulders. Dickerson accepted the re- sponsibility and challenge, as he has all season, and he slapped a sharp single to right field to give the Titans life. Colton Okes followed Dick- erson to the plate, and the de- pendable senior came through with a triple to center field to score Dickerson and move the hosts within one, 2-1. Logan Maurer then poked a single to left field to score Okes and knot the score at 2- 2. Maurer took second on the play. That brought Regan Farm- er to the plate to face Patri- ot hurler J.T. Smallwood, and Farmer hit a shot at the Patri- ot third baseman that he could not handle, allowing Farmer to reach first base on an er- ror and Maurer to score from third base (Maurer had stolen third) to give the Titans a 3-2 advantage. Noah Bryant, the GSHS se- nior left fielder, worked Small- wood for a walk (Farmer took second on an uncontest- ed steal and stole third base during Bryant's at bat). That gave Gibson South- ern runners on first and third, with two outs and Malone at the plate. Malone worked the Her- itage Hills pitcher to a 3-2 count, and on the 3-2 pitch, Malone hit a fly ball to center field, where the Patriot center fielder caught the ball for the final out of the inning, but not before the Titans had scored three runs to take a 3-2 lead after six innings of baseball. In the top of the seventh in- ning, Smallwood singled off Titan hurler Justin Stimpson to give the visitors a runner on first with no outs. The Patriots' Austin Hill at- tempted a sacrifice bunt and the Titans committed their fifth error of the game to put runners on first and second for the visitors with no outs. That brought the visitors' Evan Bowling to the plate, and he hit the first pitch from Stimpson at Maurer at third base. Maura Kluesner steps into a forehand during a number two doubles match at Pike Central.
