Titans golf places second in triangle By Andy Heuring South Gibson Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Gibson Southern placed second in a triangle meet at Rolling Hills Country Club with Jasper and Castle on Thursday. Jasper won the meet with a team score of 162, just edg- ing out the Titans with 173. Host Castle was 11 strokes back at 163. Freshman Peyton Black- ard was medalist with a 36 on the exclusive Newburgh Country Club course. Senior Ryan Islam shot a 40, Cale Martin 42 and Daw- son Maurer 45 for the team's 163. Mitchell Gilles had a 47. Titans baseball pounded by North Posey By Mike Sandifar South Gibson Sports sports@sgstartimes.com North Posey pounded vis- iting Gibson Southern in Poseyville last Tuesday 8 -1 in Pocket Athletic Conference (PAC) high school baseball action to give the visiting Ti- tans their third consecutive loss, after starting the sea- son at 7-0. Neither team scored in the first inning of the conference contest, but the hosts came up with a run in the bottom of the second to take a 1-0 lead after two innings of play. In the top of the third, Titan senior Mason Yancey worked Viking pitcher Clay Douglas for a one out walk to give the visitors a runner on first, with senior Brayden Malone com- ing to the plate. Malone immediately slapped a line drive single to left, giving Gibson Southern runners on first and second, with one out. Yancey moved to third base and Malone moved to second on a wild pitch by Douglas to put two GSHS runners in scor- ing position. Douglas then uncorked an- other wild pitch and Yanc- ey raced home with a run to knot the score at 1-1. Malone motored to third on the play. Douglas then retired the next two Titan batters on strikeouts to end the Gibson Southern scoring threat, and Gibson Southern never scored again in the fray. The Vikings plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 3-1 ad- vantage over the Titans, and the eventual winners "never looked back". North Posey put two more runs across the plate in the bottom of the fourth frame to take a 5 -1 margin over Gibson Southern, and in the bottom of the sixth inning, the hosts added another three runs to put the game out of reach of the visitors with an 8 -1 advan- tage. In the top of the seventh, the first two Titan hitters lined out, then senior Drew Foster hit a two-out single to give the visitors a runner on first. The next Titan also lined out to end the inning and the game. Douglas faced just 15 Titans over the final four innings. He put the visitors down one-two- three in the fourth inning and faced only four Gibson South- ern batsmen in fifth, sixth, and seventh frames, allowing just two hits and a walk over the final four frames. The Titans managed only six hits in the outing, with Fos- ter going three for four on the day, and Malone and seniors Oliver Hamilton and Logan Maurer each getting a base knock. The Titans had anoth- er four baserunners via walks. "We hit the ball again to- day, but we hit it at people;" said Gibson Southern Men- tor Chris May after the game, "and we had too many errors (four) to beat a good team. "Give them credit. They had 11 hits, and they played er- ror-free baseball in the field." The loss left Gibson South- ern at 7-3 on the season, in- cluding a 2-3 mark in the PAC, while the victory put North Posey at 7-4 overall and 4-2 in conference play on the 2022 baseball campaign. On Thursday the Titans were scheduled to play Her- itage Hills at Gibson South- ern, and on Saturday, Gibson Southern was scheduled to take on Evansville Christian at Gibson Southern. Maurer scooped up the hard-hit ground ball, touched the bag at third for the first out of the inning, and then, fired the ball to Okes at first base for the second out of the inning, with Hill moving to second base on the play. With two outs and Hill on second, Andersen Smith stepped into the batter's box for Heritage Hills. Smith fouled off Stimp- son's first offering, and on the next pitch (a called ball), Hill stole third base. With both teams standing in their respective dugouts, and with both teams' fans holding their breath, Stimp- son fired a fast ball to the plate to Smith. Smith smacked the base- ball at Maurer at third, and Maurer fielded the ball and threw to first for the final out of the inning and the game to break the three-game los- ing streak with the 3-2 con- ference victory. Maurer had a pair of hits in three at bats for Gibson Southern, while Foster, Dick- erson, Malone, and Okes all had one hit. Okes' hit was a run-scoring triple. Bryant worked Smallwood for two walks, while Hamil- ton and Hurless each walked once in the contest. The five errors in the bat- tle were the most for Gibson Southern this season, but the tough-minded Titans came through in the clutch with a pair of slick fielding plays by Maurer at the end to pull out the win. "We needed this one." said May after the game, "Hope- fully, this will get us going, and we can put together a string of wins. "Again today, we hit the baseball, but we hit it at their fielders on several occasions. But in the end, we did what we had to do to pull this game out. There is no question, this was a big win for us." The victory put Gibson Southern at 8 -3 on the dia- mond campaign overall on the year, including 3-3 in league play, while the loss left Heritage Hills at 8 -7, in- cluding 4-3 in PAC outings. The Titans were back in action on Saturday at home with Evansville Christian. Gibson Southern is sched- uled to play conference oppo- nent Pike Central at Gibson Southern this evening at 5 p.m., and Thursday, the Ti- tans are scheduled to travel to Huntingburg for a league battle with Southridge. It will be a busy week for the Titans, as on Friday, they travel to Mt. Carmel, Illinois, to tangle with Mt. Carmel High School at 5:00 p.m. Next Monday, GSHS will play host to always tough Jasper in a fray scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Lady Titan track nips Patriots By James Capozella South Gibson Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Haley Edwards, Hailey Richter and Chloey Graham took firsts along with two re- lays in leading the Lady Titans over the Heritage Hills Lady Patriots last week. The 71.5 to 69.5 win would have been 73.5 to 67.5 had it not been for a tenth off a second difference in the 4x100 relay. Ella Jones, Haile Pohl, Hailey Richter and Rachel Pohl ran a fleet 52.8, but were nipped at the tape by the Lady Patriots. Edwards claimed the high jump win with a 4'10 leap and Pohl was second at 4'8". Gra- ham won the discus with a toss of 98'3" and Hailey Rich- ter took first in the long jump with a distance of 14'8.5". The 4x800 relay team con- sisting of Taylor Hart, Cassi- dy Hasenour, Olivia Penning- ton and Courtney Heldt ran a 10 :29.55 to first; and Miah Roesch, Hasenour, Keelyn Wilkerson and Richter ran a 4:21.0 to first in the 4x400 re- lay. Chloe Field was second in the pole vault (7'0"); Roesch second in the 110 hurdles (18.17) and 300 hurdles (53.84); Jones second in the 100 (13.0); and Pennington second in the 3200 (12:51.64). Softball wins 12-0 over Boonville By Andy Heuring South Gibson sports sports@sgstartimes.com Gibson Southern softball capped off a big week with their third 10 -run-rule win of the week on Saturday in a 12- 0 win over Boonville. Leadoff hitter Sydney Long was 4 for 4 and scored four times, once in each inning of the game, and stole four bas- es, while Alexis Tucker threw a two-hit shutout. Nine of Boonville's 15 outs were by strikeout. Long started the scoring the for Titans, leading off with a single. She stole second, went to third on a passed ball and scored when Lauryn Ad- amson drove a fly ball to cen- ter field. "Any time you can do that to start a game, it is the way you want to start a game," said Titan Coach Gary May of Long's lead off performance. "Right now everything is clicking. We are hitting the ball, playing good defense, getting good pitching and ex- cellent base running. We just have to maintain this for a while," said May. Gibson Southern was three up and three down in the sec- ond, but they sent nine batters to the plate in both the third and fourth innings and scored five runs in each. Long opened the third in- ning with a single, stole sec- ond, went third on passed ball and stole home. Blume hit a one-out home run to make it 4-0. The Ti- tan rally continued as Ol- ivia Money hit a single and Malone reached on an error. Taylor Fonte singled, driving in Money before EmmaLee Higgs grounded out to the shortstop but brought home Malone. Alexis Tucker then singled to score Fonte for a 7- 0 lead. It continued in the fourth in- ning, which was nearly a mir- ror image of the third. Long led off with a single then stole second base. Adamson hit a sacrifice fly to move Long to third. Blume drove in Long with a single, Money reached on a error and Malone drove in Blume with a single. Fonte drove in two with a double to right field. Higgs singled and Tucker's ground ball to the shortstop drove in another run and Gibson Southern led 12-0 after four innings. In the fifth, Long led off with a double. She scored on Adamson's double and Adam- son score on a sacrifice by Money to give the Titans their 14-run total. Coach May said he is pleased with the Lady Titans line-up that has produced 18, 18 and 14 runs in their last three games. "There is a hardly a break in the line-up. A lot of times there are two or three kids (that) when they come up, the opponents can relax a lit- tle, but that isn't the case with this line-up," said May. Gabby Smitha rips a forehand back during the Ti- tans 5-0 win over Pike Central on Wednesday. Lilly Schmitt hits a forehand during her match at Pike Central.
