She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Winterheimer, Fort Branch. Robert G. Emge, an agent in Prudentials Tri-States dis- trict agency, located in Evans- ville, recently marked 20 years of service with the company. District Agency Manager El- mer L. Fruend said that Mr. Emge is a native of Evansville and a 1942 graduate of Haub- stadt High School. During World War II, he served with the U.S. 13th Air Force and completed 40 combat missions in the Southwest Pacific area. Active in Fort Branch commu- nity affairs, he is former presi- dent of the Park Board. he is a past president of both the Lit- tle League and Pony League in Fort Branch. Mr. Emge is a member of the American Le- gion and the Knights of Co- lumbus. The Kiwanis All Sports Ban- quet will be held on Monday, May 8, at 6:30 p.m. in the Fel- lowship Hall of the First Unit- ed Methodist Church. Guest speaker for the occasion will be Orlando "Gunner" Wyman, Coach at Vincennes High School. Parents are welcome to attend. Dawn is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chet Garrett of Fort Branch. Diana Graper of Gib- son Southern High School Sunshine Society was the re- cipient of one of the sixteen $500 Nurses Scholarships awarded at the State Sun- shine Society Convention at Huntington, Saturday, April 16. Donna Malone, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Malone, Fort Branch, won top honors Saturday, April 16, in a high school mathematics contest on the Indiana State Univer- sity Evansville campus. Don- na Malone, a Gibson Southern High School student, placed Sophomore class officers 1969 The class officers for the sophomore class at Fort Branch High School in 1969 were Rod Fullington, secretary; Carla Showers, student council; Randy Simon, president; Trudy Pirkle, treasurer; Chris Williams, reporter; and Debbie Oing, vice president. first in the contest's fourth di- vision for senior mathematics students, Robert Marchant, a Central High School stu- dent, was third division win- ner for advanced algebra stu- dents, and Micahel Beaven, a Central High School student, was fifth division winner for calculus students. Students from nine high schools par- ticipated in the competition which consisted of a written test and a mathorama, a live- ly team competition. Senator Birch Bayh an- nounced on Friday, April 22 that Gibson Water, Inc., has been awarded a $2 million grant from the United States Farmers Home Administra- tion for development of a rural water system to service more than 1,000 in Gibson Coun- ty. Bayh said the FHA has al- so granted the non-profit Gib- son Water, Inc., a 40 -year loan $2 million to be repaid at 5 per cent interest. The total award of $4 million in grant and loan monies will assist the water system in purchasing treat- ed water from Evansville for use in the rural areas of Gib- son County in the communi- ties of Haubstadt, Warrenton, St. James, and Johnson. Deaths: Mrs. Eleanor Brit- tingham, 47, of Fort Branch, passed away Wednesday, April 13, at Deaconess Hospi- tal; Mrs. Marcia Griswall, 83, passed away Wednesday, April 13, at Welborn Hospital. 35 YEARS AGO Fort Branch Times Thursday, April 23, 1987 A bicycle, donated by Gilles Schwinn Cyclery in Evans- ville is the top prize to be giv- en away to the child collecting the most donations for Peggy Whitten's Talent Showcase for Muscular Dystrophy. The Showcase will be held this Sunday, April 26, beginning at 1 p.m. at the Haubstadt Public School Gym. Peggy's students have been going door to door collecting money to help and a cure for Muscular Dystrophy. These students will entertain the public with gymnastics, dancing, tumbling, and many other acts during the fourth annual showcase for Muscu- lar Dystrophy. Staci Friedman Armstrong, a 21-year-old Gibson County native who completed work in December 1986, on an ac- counting degree at the Uni- versity of Southern Indiana, has been selected as the re- cipient of the 1987 USI Presi- dent's Medal. Mrs. Armstrong was presented the prestigious medal at the University's 1987 Honors day program in which more than 60 grants and schol- arships were awarded and rec- ognizing students in each of the University's seven aca- demic divisions as well as in the university-wide catego- ries. Beef and cheese crescent Pie was the winning dish in the Junior Beef Cook-off. The cook-off was held in conjunc- tion with the Tri-State Live- stock Invitational. Lori Kix- miller from North Knox Ju- nior High fixed the winning recipe. Amy Smith won sec- ond place with Sour Cream Chili Bake. Amy is a senior at Gibson Southern and is from Owensville. Angie Short, also from Owensville and Gibson Southern, was the third place winner. Angie fixed Beef Stro- ganoff. Hamburger Layer Pie took fourth place. This was made by Marcey Stanley of Sullivan. The girls received cash prizes of $100, $75, $50 and $25 for their entries. The contest was open to students from seventh grade through high school. Deaths: Rosella F. Snyder, 5 1/2, of Haub- stadt, passed away Friday, April 17 at Riley Children's Hospital. 25 YEARS South Gibson Star-Times Thursday, April 22, 1997 The South Gibson School Corporation Board voted during its April 15 meeting to implement several extra cur- ricular changes for the 1997- 98 school year. Several cur- rent positions will be vacant during the next school year, including the high school Let- terman's Club sponsor, Middle School Super Bowl sponsor, one assistant football coach, department heads for depart- ments with less than 20 sec- tions, Adult Farmers' Pro- gram, winter weight program, and one Academic Excellence sponsor. Additional positions scheduled to be added to the school corporation for the 1997-98 school year consist of one assistant baseball coach, one assistant band director (category III), one assistant summer band director (cate- gory IV ), a high school ath- letic aide (category IV ), and two sixth grade girls' basket- ball coaches. School corpora- tion officials said implementa- tion of extra curricular chang- es will be discussed with the South Gibson Teachers' As- sociation. In particular, cor- poration business Manager Don Rumble said creation of the three extra curricular po- sitions involving categories of pay will be reviewed with the local Teachers' Association. Two people were trapped in a crash and had to be freed from the car by rescue person- nel using Jaws of Life, Friday at about 8:30 p.m. Jill R. Mem- mer, 19, of Route 2, Princeton and her passenger Karma D. Beard, 19, of Gibson St., Princ- eton were both taken to Gib- son General Hospital, where they were treated and re- leased, according to a hospital spokesman. Fort Branch offi- cer Rick Sides said Frank A. Schoenbaechler of Boonville was driving a 1996 Chevrolet Blazer south on US -41, when Memmer pulled in front of him from Oak St. in Fort Branch near the Dairy Queen. Sides said upon impact the two ve- hicles spun and made con- tact again with Memmer's 1994 Dodge Shadow coming to a rest in road and Schoen- baechler's Blazer coming to rest in the median. Sides said Memmer was cited for failure to yield the right of way. Both vehicles sustained an estimat- ed $5,000 to $10,000 damage. Firemen from Fort Branch- Union Township Volunteer Fire Department, Owens- ville-Montgomery Township Fire Protection District and Haubstadt-Johnson Town- ship Volunteer Fire Depart- ment participated in a train- ing fire April 13 at a house two miles west of Fort Branch on Ind. 168. Bruce Adams, Fort Branch-Union Township chief, said the house was go- ing to be demolished and the woman who owned it offered it for a training session. The Fort Branch fire department sponsored the training fire, lasting from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. "The goal of the whole day was to allow inexperienced fire- man the opportunity to expe- rience a structure fire under controlled conditions," Adams said. "It was a very successful day of training."
