Pike Central, which starts two juniors and the rest soph- omores, placed ninth out of 16 teams in the event. Three of their five players broke 100, compared with no players breaking 100 last year. Sophomore Arri McDonald shot a 92 to post the low score for the Chargers on the cold and wet Saturday. Junior Pey- ton Howald was three back at 95 and Tyler Craig shot a 98 with Nolan Nelson at 107 for the team's 392 score. "It was tough conditions. When we teed off the wind- chill was about 30 degrees, and the course was really wet," said Charger Coach Jar- rod Gideon. "I was happy with how we played," said Gideon. He added, "It could have been a lot better, every kid had at least one double par. . . I like the direction we are head- ed and I think our scores will continue to improve." The cold, wet weather had cancelled their previous matches. The meet was won by Barr Reeve with a 324. The remain- ing team scores were: 2) Ev. Memorial 335, 3) Ev. Mater Dei 338, 4) S. Williams popped up to the short stop, but Carnahan kept the rally going with another single that scored Vinnedge. Sharp then hit a two-run sin- gle, followed by Hunt's sin- gle to drive Fulcher who was running for Carnahan, giving Pike Central a 11-3 lead. Boonville came back with two more in the fourth and then three in the fifth that fea- tured a two-run homer by Pey- ton Pryor to make it 12-9. Pike Central added one run each in the fourth and fifth innings to make it 13-9. The Chargers scored in the fourth when Mills, who walked with one out, scored on a wild pitch. In the fifth inning, Welch got all of a 1-1 pitch for her first ca- reer home run. Williams was brought in to pitch the last one and two- thirds innings. "Chloe and Sophie are such different pitchers. Sophie is a precision and off-speed pitch- er. She did a good job keep- ing the Boonville batters off balance for the first five in- nings, but then they started to pick up her timing and scored some runs. So we brought in Chloe for the last two innings. She is a power pitcher and the contrast worked. She did a good job of shutting them down," said Traylor. Lady Charger erupt in the seventh for 6-2 win By Andy Heuring Pike Central's softball team escaped after having one foot in the grave against Loogoo- tee last Thursday. Tied 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Loogoo- tee had bases loaded with no one out before Chloe Williams and the Charger defense shut them down to get to extra in- nings. In the top of the eighth, the Chargers erupted for four runs to take control of the game for a 6 -2 win. "I don't think I have ever seen where a home team gets bases loaded with no outs and doesn't score," said Pike Cen- tral Coach Dustin Traylor. The game started with Loo- gootee scoring runs in the first and second innings. In the first, Lions leadoff hitter Courter got a single and then scored on a double by Lingen- felter. In the second inning, Hen- ninger led off with a single. An error allowed her to advance. Two sacrifices by Green and Eckerle brought Henninger home for a 2-0 lead. Pike Central threatened in the first inning as Brai- ley Mills doubled to start the game. Karley Kavanaugh put down a bunt for a hit and ad- vanced Mills to third. Chloe Williams then grounded to the third base- man, who threw home and got Mills out at the plate. Pike Central didn't threat- en in the second or third in- ning but in the fourth, Alaina Sharp led off with a home run, driving a 1-0 pitch over the left field fence. They threatened to add more as Hunt followed Sharp with a double and made it to third but couldn't get home. Mills led off the fifth inning for the Chargers with a dou- ble. Kavanaugh again bunt- ed and moved Mills to third, but was out at first base. Then Williams singled to center field, bringing Mills home to tie the game. Carnahan pitched the first five innings and after giving up a run in each of the first two innings, pitched to only 11 batters over the next three innings. Williams relieved to start the sixth inning and sat down Loogootee in order with two strikeouts and an infield grounder. Pike Central didn't muster any runs in the sixth or sev- enth. Loogootee started the bottom of the seventh and fi- nal regulation inning with a walk by Eckerle. Mason bunt- ed onto first. Then Courter bunted, to load the bases on an error with no outs for Loo- gootee and the top of the Lions lineup coming to bat. Williams revved up her arm and struck out Courter swinging on a 2-2 pitch. Lin- genfelter then bunted and Wil- liams fielded it cleanly for an out. She then struck out Loo- gootee' number three batter on three pitches to end the threat. Pike Central came to bat in the top of the eighth. Tessa Vinnedge reached when her bunt was mishandled. It was the seventh time in eight in- nings Pike Central's leadoff reached base. Mills, 3-for-4 on the night with two doubles, hit a ground- er to the shortstop and was out at first, but it advanced Vinnedge to third base. A fter watching a strike go by, Kavanaugh pounded a grounder through the in- field for an RBI single and a 3-2 lead. Williams was walked on four pitches. Kavanaugh stole third base on the second pitch to Sharp. Then, Ahner, a courtesy run- ner for Williams, stole second and drew a throw to the bag from Loogootee. Kavanaugh went home on the play and the throw was dropped, allowing her to score and give the Char- gers a 4-2 lead. The rally continued. Carnahan singled to right field, advancing Ahner to third. A fter Sharp grounded out for two down, Hunt singled to center field, scoring both Ahner and Carnahan for a 6 - 2 lead going into the bottom of the eighth. Williams got the first bat- ter out on a pop-up to herself. Wittmer then singled and Green followed with a walk to make things tense. But Wil- liams then got two fly balls to end the game. "Loogootee was an ugly game. They had us down 2-0 and it was just cold and nasty, but they (Charger girls) don't ever stop fighting. We didn't crawl into a hole. We just kept fighting," said Traylor. By Andy Heuring Pike Central softball dropped a tough 12-5 loss to Daviess County, Kentucky in the second game of the Southern Slam tourney at Boonville. Daviess County, now 7-1 on the year and state runner-up last year in Ken- tucky, jumped out to a 5 -0 lead, scor- ing two in the first and three in the sec- ond. They added one in the third inning. Pike Central threatened in the first inning when Brailey Mills was hit by a pitch. Karley Kavanaugh then singled to left field to put runners at first and sec- ond with no outs. Chloe Williams flew out to center field. Then Sophie Carnah- an hit a grounder to third base. She was thrown out at first, but Mills advanced to third and Kavanaugh went to second with two outs. But the Chargers couldn't bring them home. Pike Central got on the board in the fourth inning when Alaina Sharp pound- ed the first pitch over the left field fence making it 6 -1. Daviess County countered with a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth to make it 7-1. Pike Central then scored four in the top of the fifth to mount a rally. It was started by Mills' leadoff single on a 1- 2 count. Kavanaugh drew a walk. Wil- liams grounded out but advanced both runners to second and third. Carnahan then hit a line drive single to right field to score Mills and advance Kavanaugh to third. Sharp brought them both home with her second home run in as many innings. This one came on an 0 -1 count. It cut Daviess County's lead to 7-5. But Daviess County wasted no time answering. Millie Roberts' two-run home run highlighted a three-run fifth and put the Panthers up 10 -5. Daviess County sat down the last six Charger batters to close out the game, 12-5.
