CHARELEEN CANNAVAN Chareleen (Steer) Canna- van, 90, passed away peace- fully on April 5, 2022, in Dan- ville, Ky. The only daughter of John and Dorothy Steer, was born January 20, 1932, at the family home in Petersburg. She and her older brother John Robert were raised on Pike Avenue. She attended grade school and high school in Petersburg. She served as captain of the Petersburg High School girls basketball team for four years prior to her graduation in 1950. A talented water skier, she was a member of a group that created a pyramid on skis. She realized her goal of be- coming a nurse with her 1954 graduation from the School of Nursing at Protestant Deacon- ess Hospital in Indianapolis. She loved being with her fam- ily and truly enjoyed spend- ing time with her many dear friends. She married John Canna- van, also a Petersburg native and PHS graduate, on Janu- ary 2, 1973. The couple made their home in Lexington, Ky. Following her husband's death in 2004, she moved back to Pe- tersburg. In 2014, she relocat- ed to Harrodsburg, Ky. to be closer to family. She and her family were members of the Main Street Presbyterian Church in Pe- tersburg, which they joined on Easter Sunday in 1945. She al- so attended Burgin Christian Church in Burgin, Ky. She was a frequent volunteer at Some- body's Place in Petersburg. She is survived by her step-children, John L. (Pame- la) Cannavan and Deborah (Thomas) Cambron; grand- daughters, Kaye, Megan and Claire Cambron; grandson, Justin (Katie) Cannavan; and great-grandchildren Megan, Haley, and Lucas Cannavan; nephews, Keith ( Jennifer) Steer, Kevin (Emily) Steer, Kent (Deborah) Steer; niece, Lee Anne (Don) Price; and nu- SHANNA G. PHILLIPS Shanna Gayle Phillips, 83, of Petersburg, went to be with the Lord surrounded by her loving family, on Saturday, April 9, 2022, at Amber Man- or Care Center in Petersburg. She was born on February 3, 1939 in Petersburg, to the late Wilbur E. and C. Jose- phine ( Jo) Miley. She was a member of Winslow Nazarene Church in Winslow for 20 plus years. She loved her animals, owning sev- eral dogs over the years. She also enjoyed horseback rid- ing, being outdoors, and gar- dening. She is survived by her daughter, Debbie (Pookie) Russell; son, Rick (Chris) Weathers; brother, Rick (Lin- da) Miley; step-daughter, Tammy Phillips; and step-son, Jeff (Pam) Phillips. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kirby Phil- lips; her parents; brothers, Terry Lee Weathers and Don- ald R. Weathers; and step-son, Rodney Phillips. Services are 2 p.m. EST Tuesday, April 12, 2022, at Lamb-Basham Memorial Chapel, in Oakland City, with Chaplain Cindy Lagle officiat- ing. MARTIN Sherry L. Martin, 60, of Pe- tersburg, former resident of Martin County, passed away on Tuesday, April 5, 2022, at Memorial Hospital and Healthcare Center. She was born on January 28, 1962, in Danville, Illinois to Donald and Wilma (Ziegler) Seals. She married Ralph Martin on May 19, 2011, and he sur- vives. She attended The River of Life Church in Petersburg. She loved to garden and bake. She loved to care for people and spent her time caring for the elderly for Qualicare. Most of all she loved spending time with her family. She is survived by her hus- band, Ralph Martin of Pe- tersburg; her children, April (Brad) Good, of Indianapo- lis, Brandon Blake, of Yukon, Okla., and Alan (Angie) Tarr, of Shoals; her step-children, David Eugene (Stephanie) Martin, of Dale, Angie Mar- tin, of Huntingburg; her ad- opted grandchildren, Regina Martin, Megan Martin, Mor- gan Martin; several grand- children; her parents, Don- ald and Wilma Seals, of Loo- gootee; her siblings, Ed Seals, of Loogootee, Donnie Seals, of Evansville, Mike Seals, of Loogootee; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Russell, 81, for- merly of Washington, but had resided in Petersburg for the last several years, went to his heavenly home Thursday, April 7, 2022. He was born in Daviess County on Nov. 29, 1940, to the late Woodrow Russell and Edith Irene Taylor Russell. He was a member of the class of 1957 at Washington High School, then obtained a degree to be an electrician. He was employed by Whirl- pool Corp. in Evansville as an electrician and retired af- ter 38 years of service. He was devoted to his family and en- joyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. As a young man, he enjoyed hunting and fishing; later in life he enjoyed rides in his beloved Buick to check the crops, having dinner at the Gasthof Amish Village, and just the simple freedom of be- ing able to go and come as he wished. He was also a mem- ber of the Masonic Lodge un- til his health would no longer allow it. He is survived by his loving daughters, Roxanne ( John) Keaton, Betty (Bill Harris) Russell, Rosanna (Scott) Merkel and Rhonda (Kevin) Robinson; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sib- lings, Gail Kirkpatrick, Susie Kendall and Terry Russell; and many nieces and neph- ews. BARRET T Gary Wayne Barrett, 82, Eu- gene Pleasants Odum Chair of Ecology Emeritus, of Athens, Ga., formerly of Princeton, passed away in his home on April 10, 2022. His childhood education began in a one-room school- house in rural Pike County. During grade school he de- veloped an avid appreciation of nature. During his years at Mount Olympus, he was an outstanding high school ath- lete, having lettered four years in baseball and three years in basketball. He was recognized with the Clem Award for team leadership his junior year and leading scorer his senior year, each in basketball. He attend- ed a small college, Oakland City College, presently Oak- land City University, where he earned a BS Degree in Bi- ology, graduating cum laude in 1961. He was president of his freshman and sophomore classes during this time. Lat- er to be awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science Degree in 1987 from that same institu- tion. While attending Oakland City College, he noticed a fly- er pinned to a bulletin board announcing a graduate pro- gram in biology offered at Marquette University, Mil- waukee, Wisc. He was accept- ed at Marquette University earning a MS Degree in Biol- ogy in 1963. Fortunately, his mentor, Reznaut M. Darnell, realized his potential within the newly developing field of ecology. His mentor at the Uni- versity of Georgia was Eugene Pleasants Odum, an interna- tionally recognized ecologist. He earned a PhD in Ecology at the University of Georgia, Ath- ens, Ga. in 1967. From there he became Distinguished Pro- fessor of Ecology at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. Following a two-year ap- pointment (1981-1983) as Di- rector of the Ecology Program at the National Science Foun- dation, NSF, he was Chair of the Applied Ecology Sec- tion of the Ecological Society of America (1985 -1987). He served as president of three professional societies—Unit- ed States Section of the Inter- national Association for Land- scape Ecology (1988 -1990), Association of Ecology Re- search Centers (1988 -1996), and the prestigious American Institute of Biological Scienc- es (1998). For these accom- plishments he was elected a Fellow by the American As- sociation for the Advance- ment of Science (1990). His body of work consists of 198 peer-reviewed publications, and nine books. Among his most notable is Fundamentals of Ecology Fifth Edition, coau- thored with the late Eugene P. Odum, now published in seven languages. He is recognized as co-founder of the Institute of Environmental Sciences (IES) Program, Miami Uni- versity, and received its Award of Distinction in 1977. He was founder of two field stations, namely, University of Georgia HorseShoe Bend Experimen- tal Site, and Miami Universi- ty Ecology Research Center. Gary received the Institute of Biological Sciences Presiden- tial Citation Award (2000) in recognition of his leadership and contributions in the bio- logical sciences and the Unit- ed States International Asso- ciation for Landscape Ecolo- gy Distinguished Landscape Ecology Award (2001). He was recipient of the Mi- ami University Most Out- standing and Effective Teach- ing Award (1971) and Excel- lence in Undergraduate Men- toring Award (2005) voted by University of Georgia stu- dents. In addition to ecology, many of his undergraduate and graduate students have gone on to become profession- als in fields such as law, medi- cine, business, and academia. He is survived by his wife of fifty-three years, Terry Lynn; brother, Max Alvin Barrett; nieces, Kristi Kay Newber- ry, Kayla Dawn Morton, and Kara Lynn Brown; grandchil- dren, Brittnee Paige Carnes and Kagen Michael Rawls; great-grandchildren, Haylynn Harper Carnes and Cylan Mi- chael Carnes; and brother-in- law, Jack Lee Arthur, of Fort Washington, Md. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ida Eilene (Schaffter) and Perlie Wallace Barrett; and daughter, Tiffa- ny Lynn. Notification of the celebra- tion of his life will be forth- coming.
