The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, April 13, 2022 D-1 CHURCH Submit church items: Call: 812-354-8500 Email: news@pressdispatch.net or bring in a hard copy: 820 E. Poplar Street, Petersburg Jesus rode into Jerusalem on the young don- key. In the crowd that day were opponents of Je- sus who were alarmed over the shouts of "Ho- sanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel! " John 12:13. These antagonists were those of whom Jesus said would reject him. This is a reminder to all Christians that Jesus said, "If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you." John 15:18. Their demand upon Christ? "And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, re- buke your disciples." Luke 19:39. Jesus was about to get canceled. We are living in a time of unparalleled social upheaval and change. If you are a Christian or someone who has a moral compass, this change is not for the good. Inflation is soaring along with the cost of food and gas. NATO, which includes the U.S., is at war with Russia. People's confi- dence in our government and the press are at record lows. The press, along with government talking-heads, insist everything is good when we know things are bad. Soviet dissident Alexander Solzhenitsyn saw this same propaganda in the former Soviet Union. He said, "We know they are lying. They know they are lying. They know that we know they are lying. We know that they know we know they are lying. And still they continue to lie." If this is a charade, then what's behind it? In his Mount Olivet discourse (Mt 24, Mark 13, Luke 21). Jesus said cataclysmic changes were coming along with deception on a scale human- ity has never experienced. The prophet Daniel was told, "And there shall be a time of trouble, such as never has been since there was a nation till that time." Da 12:1. Are we there yet? When Jesus rode into Jerusalem on Palm Sun- day, it was "the day of reckoning." Hundreds of years before Christ, the prophet Zechariah pre- dicted this day. This was the day the Messiah would show himself at his temple. And what did Jesus hear? Over the noise of an adoring crowd, the reli- gious rulers demanded Jesus quiet his disciples. Jesus' reply was he couldn't: "He answered, I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out." Luke 19: 40. What was Jesus' reaction to this day? "And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, saying, Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes." Luke 19:41-42. His rejection meant big trouble was coming. The cancel culture crowd intends to stifle any discussion that doesn't agree with their agenda. They are rewriting history with their assault on all historical figures they label as racist, too reli- gious, homophobic, and overly white. This crowd believes they can whitewash the past and cre- ate a new reality. Jesus warned the people their cancelling of him would lead to no good. On the way to Golgotha, a multitude of people and wom- en weeping for him followed. He turned to them and said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your chil- dren." Luke 23:28. Cancelling Jesus was only going to make mat- ters worse. A fter Jesus' ascension, the religious leaders were determined to stamp out this new sect of no-good Christians. They demanded the apostles quit preaching about Jesus. "Saying, we strictly charged you not to teach in this name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you intend to bring this man's blood upon us." Ac 5:28. Ironically, Saul was a member of this religious court. Saul would become a Christian. He be- came known as Paul and led thousands of people to believe in Jesus Christ. In time, Rome turned on Christians. Christians by the thousands per- ished. More were persecuted. They canceled Christianity. Yet no amount of governmental tyranny or public persecution could stop God's message of Love. Rome collapsed while Christianity thrived. In recent times, Lenin and his Bolsheviks killed or imprisoned almost one-million priests, nuns, and clergy in the early days of the Soviet Union. His worker's paradise destroyed or closed most church buildings and forced Christianity underground. Like Rome, the Soviet Union is no more. Christ's church lives on in Russia. You can't cancel God's truth. Jesus told Saul how futile it was to resist the truth. On the Damascus Road, a brilliant light blinded Saul. He heard a voice. "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me? And he said, Who are You, Lord? Then the Lord said, I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you to kick against the goads." Acts 9:4-5. Goads were long, sharpened sticks. Farmers would use them to prod oxen to move or change direction when they were hitched to yokes. When jabbed with the stick, the ox would kick against it and feel pain. It would soon learn that it was better to accept the direction of the farmer than to "kick against the goad." Are you kicking or plowing? Good day to you all hope you have been having as good a week as you can so far. Last week was a decent week for us because every- one was well and in decent shape for once. We only have one doctor appointment next week as far as I know so that's good for us. Later this month we will have some appointments in Evansville. We have plans next Friday to go Good Fri- day services at church. It has been a long time since our family attended a Good Friday ser- vice, so we are looking forward to it. I had my desk top computer repaired last week at Tim's computer in Oakland City and it does run differently now. My computer is old, but it accepted the upgrades he installed. Due to its age some of the advanced features will not operate. Most of them were not need- ed by our household, so it wasn't a huge loss. They say April showers bring on May flow- ers. If that is true we will a beautiful May. The rain doesn't bother me much except I am be- coming more and more lazy. It is so easy to sit in my chair and watch it rain. With all the ex- temely large trees in our yard, I am a bit con- cerned about their root systems. We have had a couple of them just fall over from all the wa- ter in their bases. Have you noticed how just about everything you replace in your home is supposed to be smart. The thermostat Benner and company replaced in our heaating and cooling system was so smart we had trouble getting it going right. A fter three attempts to get it somewhat right, we finally got it running somewhat. This thing even senses when you are not home and adjusts itself. My hats off to the furnance guys. I would have lost my patience with it and would have given up on it, but they kept trying. My wife and I took our grandkids to two Easter egg hunts and was impressed with the way both were set up and run with a fairness that was outstanding. The first one we attend- ed was at Hornady Park which was put on by the Petersburg Moose lodge. I like to give ku- dos when possible and they rate a big one for thier egg hunt. The second one we attended was at Cup Creek General Baptist and again fairness and fun was had by all the kids and us big kids. There wasn't as many children there, but each got enough candy and prizes to keep them on a sugar high for a couplle of months. Here is an- other kudo to them for a job well done. Sunday school was good last Sunday. We are exploring salvation and prayer now. Earnest- ly ask for forgiveness and accepting the for- givness of Jesus. Once you have been forgiv- en you are a newborn Christian ready to learn how and what Jesus needs of you. Church service was about Palm Sunday or about Jesus entering Jerusalem on His bor- rowed donkey and the beginning of His tri- ump over the world of sin. Don't forget to be a blessing this week to all you meet. The church page is made possible by the following firms and businesses: Amber Manor Care Center Petersburg — 812-354-3001 Benner & Co.
