Poplar Street, Petersburg "Rebuke not an elder, but entreat him as a fa- ther; and the younger men as brethren; the el- der women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity." — I Timothy 5:1,2 The Apostle Paul deals with many differ- ent types of relationships in his epistles, but perhaps the most delicate relationship is with those who are older in years. Like the seasons of the year, each of us gradually grow older un- til we find ourselves in the winter of our lives. The first 70 years are normally filled with vim and vigor as we fulfill the desires of our heart. But if by reason of strength we survive beyond this point the Scriptures indicate that the days ahead are going to be filled with labor and sor- row. Labor, in the sense that even the mundane things of life, such as rising from a chair, be- comes burdensome. To complicate matters further, sorrow sur- rounds us like a tattered garment as death robs us of those we love. Little wonder that Paul ad- monishes us to esteem the senior members of the Body of Christ as fathers and mothers. Their plight deserves our sensitivity and their years of experience our respect. Furthermore, it will serve us well to remember that some- day soon we will be the patriarch or matriarch. Sadler There is not much good news to be found of late. The price of gas, food and energy prices is skyrocketing. This alone is enough for most people to deal with; now the world is holding its collective breath over war. Russia has declared war on the Ukraine, and we watch with bated breath praying it will not develop into a world war. Regardless of the out- come, death, disease, and a host of humani- tarian needs follow war. The world will be a less safe place when the conflict is over. Je- sus warned of wars and rumors of wars un- til he returns. He hasn't returned, so we continue to pray for his appearance. The Bible has a lot to say about the daily grind of life and how to remain hopeful, faith- ful, and overcoming in challenging time. I be- lieve most people attend Church to hear the Word of God. If the focus of the sermon is upon Christ's power and how he gives every believ- er power to overcome the world, it will nour- ish the soul and edify the Spirit. Anything less will have little spiritual impact upon the pa- rishioner. Everyone can find themselves in the Gospel of Christ. Jesus' ministry covers every aspect of life. Everyone seeking Christ came with an insurmountable problem or troublesome ques- tion. To be human is to be occupied by the toils of life. It is Christ's words that give the seeker the keys to unlock the chains that bind them. Some of you might recall the sudden death of Elvis. The news broke as a thunderclap. Headlines screamed, "The King is Dead! " Mil- lions of fans around the world cried and mourn- ed. Tributes to the 'King' of rock filled reams of newspaper print. Yet on an average day, more than 100,000 relatively unknown people leave this life for the next. This number is incompre- hensible because it is global. It is time to put words to thoughts and write down a few of my rambling ideas. I don't like to talk about feeling bad so often, but another week of meds and sitting inside. I don't want to jinx myself, but I do believe the doctor has fi- nally given a dose of antibiotics that was strong enough to get rid of a sinus infection which has been bothering me for quite a while. I dread tak- ing many more pills because it seems as though a medicine for one malady seems to bring on another. Our grandson had his first t-ball practice last Wednesday evening and I really didn't feel up to going, but I am glad I went. The little ball play- ers really enjoyed their practice. They had a good practice and should have learned some- thing about baseball. They were sometimes a little unsure what they were being asked to do but seemed like their coach kept their attention as well as anyone could with a bunch of ener- getic children. We were able to go to the elementary school's Spring concert and I believe I was a proud Pa- pa because a couple of tears had to be secretly wiped from my eyes. It was very enjoyable for those who attended. The girl that teaches music to these kids deserves a hearty hand clap and a Assembly of God RIVER OF LIFE 342 E. "The Lord your God is liv- ing among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs" (Zephani- ah 3:17 NLT). Wouldn't you say a grand- mother's feeling for her grand- children can be summarized in the word "delight"? Listen to the synonyms, cherish, relish and adore. Now trans- fer this experience to how our heavenly Father feels about his children. He loves with more intensity than any syn- onym could capture. He loves us so strongly that our fears our calmed. Take a moment today and revel in the fact that God delights in you. He knows our weaknesses and our flaws, but still rejoices over us. We should sing a song of praise to him every day. You are welcome to worship with us. Ralph Newkirk, Pastor Marla Morrison, Reporter AYRSHIRE VALLEY G.B. CHURCH 1947 E. Co. Rd. 375 S. The Bible confronts us with our moral independence with- in ourselves and our spiritu- al dependence upon God. In the picturesque words of the Psalm, David says, "By my God I can leap over a wall." We can jump over some barri- ers in life by our own will and our own efforts; God has not left us completely powerless. But some walls are so high we need more than this. The Psalmist knew such walls. They could be leaped only with the help of God. When we try to jump over them by ourselves, we repeat- edly fall short. But with God's help, we can conquer them. What walls do you need to conquer? A habit you cannot break? An emotion that de- feats you? An attitude that separates you from others? A heart beset with doubt or dis- couragement or fear? Whatev- er it is, with God's help you can leap over that wall. Jerry "Tuffy" Blackwell, Pastor Sharon Kendall, Reporter BIBLE BAPTIST CHURCH An Independent Baptist Church 4995 N. Co. Rd. 850 E.
