Washington poured 55 points including nine three-pointers. It started as a hard-fought defensive battle. More than five minutes into the game, Washington led 3-1. Pike Central's only score at the 5:48 mark was a Quade Morton free throw. Washing- ton's Joah Horrall, who is an Otwell native, rebounded his own blocked shot and put it back in for the Hatchets' first basket at the six minute mark of the first quarter. The only score over the next four minutes was a Hor- rall free throw. But with 1:52 left, Horrall hit a three, mak- ing it 5 -1 and then at the buzz- er, Tyler Boyd hit a layup mak- ing it 8 -1. Pike Central was having success getting in the passing lanes and creating turnovers, but they were so cold from the floor they only got one free throw out of three breakaway layups following steals. In the second quarter, Washington countered the Chargers' pressure with back cuts as Boyd scored three times on layups off of cuts without the ball. Dalton Thurston knocked down two three-pointers, lead- ing Washington to an 18 -point quarter. Pike Central tried to keep pace as Morton hit a three and Braden Howald rebounded his brother Peyton's miss for a basket, making it 16 -8. But then the floodgates broke as Washington pulled out to a 26 - 11 lead before the Chargers' Clark scored on a drive in the paint, just before the buzzer to make it 26 -13 Pike Central used a drive by Peyton Howald and a 15 ft. jumper by Morton to keep pace at the beginning of the third quarter and trailed 28 - 17 with 4:25 left in the quar- ter. Morton led the Chargers with 16 points. He was the on- ly Charger in double figures. Then Brycen Neidigh got hot. Red hot. He hit four straight three pointers over the last four minutes of the third quarter and stretched Washington's lead to 45 -23 by the end of the third quarter, and the game was decided. Pike Central hit 11 of 40 on the night for 27.5 percent. "We did not shoot the ball well. We settled for our shots. We have to get more interior touches to Kendric and Pey- ton and Gish," said Charger Coach Hunter Elliott. "I thought defensively we did a pretty good job of get- ting in the passing lanes and making it difficult for Wash- ington," said Elliott. "In the second half they hit some shots and we didn't. It wasn't our night. We can defi- nitely execute better, and get better shots. We had some ad- vantages, but we just weren't able to use them," said Elliott.
