It is their sixth win in the last seven games as they head into the last two weeks of the season. "It is definitely nice after traveling all the way down there to come back home with a win," said Charger Coach Hunter Elliott. Gish led the way for the Chargers with 15 points and was the only Charger to score in the fourth quarter as they battled shooting woes. "That is as poorly as we have shot the ball all year," said Elliott. They got off to a good start. Pike Central had four players score in the first quarter. Ken- dric Sorgius and Peyton How- ald both had four, while Quade Morton and Gish each had two. On defense they held Tell City to just two free-throws in the quarter. But in the second quarter the Marksmen found their range, pouring in 18 points as Byron Meserve and Kea- ton Lloyd both had eight points in the quarter. Pike Central countered with 16 points in the second quar- ter as five players scored in- cluding threes by Alex Clark and Quade Morton plus four points from Peyton Howald and Gish. Howald was the lone Char- ger who was hot from the floor. He shot five-of-five on the night while the rest of the team hit only 11 of 33 shots for 33 percent. "Peyton did a nice job get- ting in double figures for us," said Elliott. The Chargers were also cold from long range as they hit only 5 of 21 three point at- tempts with Gish hitting 3 of 7 and Clark was 1 of 2. Howald had three offen- sive rebounds to go with his 10 points. Morton and Sorgi- us led the Chargers with four assists each. The Chargers went into the locker room leading 28 -20. They came out of the it cold. "We played well defensive- ly all night. We just didn't hit shots," said Elliott. When Pike Central went cold Tell City started making plays. "They just kind of hung a around and hung around. We had several opportunities ear- ly in the game and just didn't put them away." Pike Central was held to only seven points in the third quarter, which allowed Tell City to cut into their lead an- other five points until they trailed only 35 -32 after three quarters. In the fourth quarter, Tell City continued to battle and the Chargers continued to miss. Their only score in the first seven minutes was a three-pointer by Gish as Tell City took a two-point lead with about a minute left. Pike Central missed an opportunity in the paint and then got the ball back out of bounds. "We ran a play we had been running. Gish got the ball in the corner and knocked it down," said Elliott. Pike Central was able to prevent Tell City from scor- ing on their last three posses- sions of the game to get the win. It was the Chargers' third win in a row and they are now 8 -9 on the season. Elliott said the Chargers are learning how to win even when they aren't playing well. "When we can win a game when two of our leading scor- ers aren't playing well, we are getting better. I don't think we would have won that game ear- lier in the season," said Elliott. JV BEATS TELL CITY 47-39 Pike Central's Zane Ge- hlhausen had 12 and Drew Dawson added eight points as the Charger junior varsity exploded for 18 points in the third quarter and went on to win 47-39. They trailed 23-18 at half- time, but they took off in the third quarter with six players scoring, including six points by Brenton Fryrear in the quarter. It gave them a 36 -31 lead they increased to eight in the final quarter for the fifth win of the season. They are now 5 -9 on the year. They beat the Braves to tloose balls, blocked shots, cut off the passing lanes and didn't allow Tecumseh good looks at the basket. They did those things well enough to hold the Braves to just six points in the third quarter. Elliott praised the job on defense by the Howald broth- ers. "Generally we have Pey- ton guarding our opponents' best big and Braden guarding their best guard," said Elliott. Bailey and Drew DuPont were a one-two punch for the Braves in the first half scor- ing 19 of their 21 points. "Both those kids hit some tough shots and made some plays in the first half, but in the sec- ond half we did a real good job of not letting them get good looks and holding Bailey to four points in the second half," said Elliott. Gish got hot in the third quarter. He hit a five footer in the lane in traffic and then hit both free-throws after being fouled a couple of possessions later at the 3:06 mark to put Pike Central up 38 -24 In a 30 -second span Peyton Howald got a rebound basket. The next trip down the floor he broke free on the baseline. Sorgius zipped him the ball and Howald converted putting the Chargers up 42-27 at the end of the third quarter. Morton tipped in a Howald miss to give the Chargers a 46 -29 lead with 6:15 left and all but the final margin was decided. "They have worked really hard and now we are getting some wins and getting some confidence. The kids are div- ing on the floor getting some loose balls, winning the re- bound battle, and just play- ing aggressively makes a big difference," said Elliott of the Charger recent five-of-six run. JV WINS, 41-29 The Charger junior varsi- ty clamped down on Tecum- seh only allowing four points in the first quarter and five points on the second quar- ter on their way to a 41-29 win Wednesday night. Albert Whitehead led the way for the Chargers with 13 points. He scored eight of those in the third quarter, while Pike Central was mount- ing a 34-17 lead. In the first quarter both Chase Ridao with six points and Zane Gelhausen with five individually outscored the Braves. Drew Dawson and Gelhau- sen both had seven points for the Chargers, who are 4-9 on the season. Charger Julian Gish goes up for a shot in the lane as a Tecumseh defender 'palms' his head. Gish had 15 points in the win for the Chargers. Braden Howald lays in two points during the Chargers win. He had six points. Quade Morton splits two defenders in the lane for a lay-up as a Tecum- seh defender pulls on his jersey.
