Spring Forward By Andy Heuring Sophomore guard Quade Mor- ton exploded for 27 points to lead Pike Central to a 64-39 win over Tecumseh on Wednesday. In a rug- ged game that was played at frenet- ic pace, the Chargers took the early lead on a Kendric Sorgius drive. He was fouled and hit both free-throws giving the Chargers a lead they nev- er relinquished. "I think we are playing some good basketball. This win is a good step moving toward post-season," said Charger Coach Hunter Elliott. It was the fifth win in their last six games and improved their re- cord to 7-9. Morton poured in 11 points in the first quarter in what was mostly a back-and-forth contest. "Quade's ability to score is up there with just about anyone. He is going to have some really big games," said Elliott. Tecumseh's Dax Bailey answered with seven first quarter points and 19 for the game to counter Morton. The score was tied at 7-7 with 3:40 left in the first quarter. Braden Howald's steal and layup broke the tie and Morton followed and a jumper just inside the three- point line to give the Chargers an 11-7 lead. The Chargers would stretch lead as Morton scored Pike Central's next six points including a basket with 3.2 seconds left in the first quarter for a 17-11 lead. Peyton Howald pushed the lead to 19 -11 on a baseline cut with a great assist from Sorgius with 6:40 left in the second. Over the next 45 seconds Bailey knocked down two threes to get Te- cumseh back into the game at 19 -17 Morton then had a drive with a spin move for a lay-up, despite a heavy foul, and hit the free-throw for a 22-17 lead. Morton was 7-of-7 from the free throw line and pulled down 8 rebounds. Pike Central as a team was 15 of 21 from the line. "One of the things we have been harping on is to not settle, to be aggressive and play in- side-out and get to the free throw line. We did a nice job of getting of that and we made them," said El- liott. A Morton three-pointer on the next possession made it 25 -17. Sophomore Julian Gish, who had 15 points and seven rebounds, hit a three off a no-look pass from Mor- ton making it 29 -21 with less than a minute left in the half. Then Mor- ton was fouled on a drive and hit both free throws and the Chargers owned a 31-21 lead at halftime. PC moves to new Princeton sectional; draw is Sunday By Andy Heuring March Madness is upon us in Indiana High School basketball. This Sunday the state tournament draw for boys basketball will be announced. Tournament play starts Tuesday, March 1 with games on Friday, March 4 and Saturday, March 5. Pike Central is in a new sectional this year at Princ- eton, where they will compete with Princeton (3-16), Sullivan (18 -1), Vincennes Lincoln (0 -17) and Wash- ington (8 -9). The Chargers match up well with all the teams. This season, Pike Central has beaten Princ- eton 43-41 on December 4 and Vincennes 40 -39 on January 11. They play at Washington on Monday, Feb. 21 with the varsity at 7:30 p.m. Both teams are 8 -9 now. Before the Washington game, Pike Central is scheduled to play Jasper at home Friday, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Washington has three games before the Monday, Feb. 21 game. They are scheduled to play Heritage Hills on Tuesday, Boonville on Friday and South Knox on Saturday. Pike Central comes into the last two weeks of the season on a hot streak, winning their last three and six of seven. The young Charger squad, which starts two sopho- mores and three juniors, has been improving steadi- ly after losing three straight games by four points or less in December. Sullivan has to be considered the favorite with an 18 -1 record. Their only loss was to Terre Haute North in December. Charger Coach Hunter Elliott said this year's sec- tional is "wide open." "That is always the goal. Our guys have been dead- set all year on cutting down the nets," said Elliott of the Chargers.
