Dementia Friendly Petersburg group seeks to raise awareness and promote community events By Sherri Sebella Those caretakers or others dealing with the crippling effects of Dementia, have somewhere to turn for support, education and interactive community activities in Petersburg. The Dementia Friendly Petersburg organi- zation received its designation as a Dementia Friendly Com- munity from De- mentia Friendly America, in Feb- ruary of 2021. Dementia Friendly Amer- ica, is a nation- al network of communities, organizations and individuals seeking to en- sure that com- munities across the U.S. are equipped to support people living with dementia and their caregivers. "The Dementia Friendly Petersburg mis- sion is to create an inclusive community that is welcoming, mindful and inspirational for peo- ple living with dementia and their caregivers through education and action," Brenda Han- cock, Dementia Friendly Petersburg Coordi- nator, said. "Every community sector is affect- ed by dementia; the Dementia Friendly Peters- burg Action Team's goal is to work within the community to provide activities such as Mem- ory Cafes, dementia friendly dining experienc- es, as well as other activities and educational opportunities for people living with dementia and their caregivers. At present, we are simply working to create a presence within the com- munity so that businesses, organizations and individuals know what we are trying to accom- plish, not only in Petersburg, but throughout Pike County," Hancock said. In addition, several of the Dementia Friend- ly Petersburg Action Team Members are also Dementia Friends Champions. The Dementia Friends Indiana movement seeks to advance education and awareness of dementia, reduce stigma associated with the disease, and create community environments that are welcoming and conducive for those liv- ing with dementia. The Dementia Friends Indi- ana and Dementia Friendly America missions and goals go hand in hand. Dementia Friends Indiana seeks to create "Dementia Friends" within the community. To become a Dementia Friend, a person can either attend an in-person workshop or watch a series of online videos. A list of workshops can be found at DementiaFriendsIndiana.org.
