The elevator had closed several years ago. • Sara Deffendall, 44, of 877 S. CR 500 W, Petersburg, was arrested on charges of ne- glect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury, a lev- el 3 felony; resisting law en- forcement; battery of a pub- lic safety official, a level 6 fel- ony; possession of parapher- nalia; and possession of meth, a level 6 felony. Also Danton Willis, 24, was arrested on charges of obliterating the serial number on a handgun, a level 5 felony. Both arrests came after police executed a search warrant at the Deffen- dall residence. While there, police found Mary Deffendall, Sarah's grandmother in a bed- room. The probable cause af- fidavit stated, "Mary seemed to barely be breathing and did not seem to be able to talk. Mary was covered in flies and was laying in her own filth." FEBRUARY Mary Deffendall's house at 877 S. County Road 500 W. was destroyed by fire early Saturday morning just days after Deffendall had died and her granddaughter, Sara Deffendall, had been arrest- ed on charges of neglect of a dependent and resisting ar- rest. Police, days earlier, had searched it, looking for three large screen T Vs stolen from Jarrod Willis. Police said they found three televisions match- ing the description of those stolen from Willis. The fire was later declared an arson. • Parents attended the Pike County School Board meeting complaining about the schools' COVID policies and the number of times stu- dents were being quarantined. "My feeling is why can't we fol- low CDC guidelines with test- ing on days five, six or seven and return on day seven with a negative test," said Chris Young. He complained his daughter was out for 14 days and back in school for two days and the back out for an- other 14 days. . . My kids want to go to school, but they are afraid of going because they don't want to get quarantined. They aren't getting anything out of this school year. Give it some thought and brain- storm," said Young. • Indiana announced COVID vaccines for those 65 and older were now available. They were first made available for those 80 and older on Janu- ary 13 and more than 1,500 in Pike County had already been vaccinated. • About three inches of snow hit the area and brought the lowest temperatures since 2019. • Kale Speedy, at 182 pounds, and Corey Goeppner, at 192 pounds, both qualified for the regional as they placed third and fourth in Southridge sectional. • Courtney Oakes, 23, of Bloomfield, was injured in a crash on I-69, when she was hit head-on by a car driven by Jenifer Pena, 20, of Hunting- burg. Pena was driving the wrong way, southbound in the northbound lanes, and tested three times the legal limit in Indiana for blood alcohol con- tent. • Art and Mary Lou Kix- miller have been married for 63 years. They first ex- changed valentines 75 years ago in the first grade. • All three of Petersburg Elementary School's robotics teams qualified for the VEX Robotics State Finals Robot Skills Challenge. All three teams are ranked in the top 51 teams in the state. • Pike County was hit with between seven and nine inch- es of snow, which cancelled school and made travel diffi- cult. MARCH • Vaccines became avail- able for everyone 55 and older and the number of active cas- es dropped to 13, with a sev- en-day positivity rate of 2.1 percent. • Tony Garrett, 46, of Winslow, was charged with criminal trespass, public in- toxication, sexual battery and public indecency. He was ac- cused of exposing himself to and inappropriately touching a 17-year-old. • Terry Shoultz, of rural Pe- tersburg, was injured when she slammed into the back of a FedEx truck. • Kenzie Powell was named 2021 Homecoming Queen for Pike Central. Emma McKin- ney was named the Princess. • More than 130 people par- ticipated in the Indiana Spe- cial Olympics' Polar Plunge at Prides Creek. The event raised $ 65,000. • Petersburg Elementary School's three robotics teams, Team Hogwarts Expresso, consisting of Keira Blaize, Channing Sorgius and Lora- lei Hoskins; Team watermel- on Squad, consisting of Jack- son Burkhart and Eli Keeker; and Team GOAT Brains, con- sisting of Joshua Smith, Kade Benner and Lliinkyn Knust, all qualified for the 2021 VEX Robotics World Championship on May 24-29. • The City of Petersburg Deffendoll house destroyed February 3 — A fire destroyed Mary Deffendoll's house on Saturday morning. The fire was spotted by Jacob Newberg who was driving by and saw the flames at the back of the house at 877 S. CR500W, Petersburg. It was paged at 8:36 a.m. Petersburg Fire Chief Ross Elmore said the Indiana State Fire Marshal was contacted and is investigating the fire.
