B-2 Wednesday, December 22, 2021 The Press-Dispatch SPORTS BRIEFS Wanted: Hunters to help hungry Hoosiers According to Feeding America, approximately 883,260 Indiana residents regularly struggle with food insecurity – 274,080 of which are children. Food banks, pantries and soup kitchens continue to work to protect the most vulner- able and under-served in our communities during these uncertain times. Proper nutrition is vital to the growth and development of children and the health of all Hoosiers. That is why pro- tein, an important component of every cell in the body and one of the most important nutrients for brain and body development, is so important. Sadly, it is also the hard- est commodity for food banks to obtain, especially now. Hoosiers Feeding the Hungry would like to remind all hunters and landowners about our deer donation program. A fter you've filled your freezer, help them to feed those in need in your area by donating to Hoosiers Feeding the Hungry's "Meat" the Need initiative. Just take your deer in to your local, participating meat processor and tell them you would like to donate it to Hoosiers Feeding the Hun- gry. There is no charge to you. A fter being processed, your donation will be given to local hunger relief agencies. The 2021-2022 deer hunting seasons are as follows: Re- duction Zone: Sept. 15, 2021-Jan. 31, 2022 (where open). Archery: Oct. 1, 2021-Jan. 2, 2022. Muzzleloader: Dec. 4- 19, 2021. Help feed your less fortunate fellow Hoosiers by donat- ing a deer this season. Hunting, fishing, trapping license fees increase in 2022 For the first time since 2006, Indiana DNR Division of Fish & Wildlife (DFW ) has increased fees for hunting, fishing, and trapping licenses. Commercial license fees al- so increase, some for the first time since the 1980s. The increases will be applied to personal licenses start- ing with the 2022-2023 license year (April 1, 2022 – March 31, 2023) that will go on sale in January. The fee increase does not affect licenses for the remainder of the 2021-2022 license year (April 1, 2021 – March 31, 2022), even if those licenses are purchased after Jan. 1. The new fees allow DFW to maintain core programs in- cluding habitat restoration, maintenance of public lands, scientific research and education, and expansion of oth- er services to manage Indiana's fish and wildlife for ev- eryone to enjoy. More information on these changes, including a full list of the new fees, can be found here: dnr.IN.gov/fish-and- wildlife/licenses-and-permits/fee-changes. The Lady Chargers' lead scorer was Mallory Hunt, tal- lying eight points. Following her was Brailey Mills with sev- en, Kya Sullivan with six, An- na Whitehead with four and Shelby Meadows with one point. SATURDAY, DEC. 18 The Lady Chargers went played North Knox on Satur- day on their home court. Un- fortunately, the scoring was much the same, with the Pike Central not making it out of the single digits in scoring throughout the game. How- ever, when the game hit the fourth quarter, the Lady Char- gers seemed to get some of their fight in the game and held North Knox scoreless for the whole quarter. They also managed to score four points that quarter. However, the damage was done, and the Lady Chargers had lost their second game of the week. The Lady Chargers were led in scoring by both Mills and Hunt, with four points each. Following them was White- head, Meadows and Hailey Parker, who each scored two points. Coach Kyle McCutchan commented that the team played two tough opponents this week, and things just did not go their way. He stated the team will just have to keep working and they are looking to bounce back against Jasper this coming Tuesday. JUNIOR VARSITY The Lady Charger junior varsity also played North Knox on Saturday, losing by a score of 39 -10. True to how it happened for the var- sity, the JV team followed in the same pattern. They start- ed off slow, seemed to battle a bit, but throughout the game, the scoring pace got lower and lower. Whereas North Knox started off with a strong first half of the game and finished with a strong fourth quarter. On a positive note, however, the Lady Chargers, after half- time, seemed to be able to hold North Knox for one quarter to only one point scored. Unfor- tunately, they were unable to catch up, only scoring two points that quarter. The JV was led in scoring by Tiffany Artega with six points. Following her was Keena Young and Ruby Sallee, with both scoring two points. The Lady Chargers played Jasper on Tuesday, December 21, the day before Christmas break began. Look for that game next week and see how they end 2021.
