Poplar Street, Petersburg NEWS BRIEFS Trash sites holiday schedule The trash sites will be closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and will open on Monday, December 27. They will also be closed New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, and will reopen with regular hours on Monday, Jan- uary 3. Multicultural event at Dubois Co. Museum January 6 The Dubois County Museum will host a multicultural event at the museum at 2704 N. Newton Street (U.S. 231 N.) on January 6, 2022, called Dia De Los Reyes or Day of the Kings. Doors will open at 6 p.m. At 6:20 p.m., the His- tory of Day of the Kings and Epiphany will be given. Be- ginning at 7 p.m., Claudia Juarez will offer a cooking class on baking Concha Bread. Conchas are a traditional Mex- ican sweet bread roll, a type of bread also known as pan dulce that is sold at many panaderias (bakeries). Class size is limited to 100. Community rallies around tornado victims The City of Petersburg and surrounding communi- ties stepped up big this past week to assist the Ken- tucky tornado victims. Petersburg Nazarene Church was a collection site for items needed to help pro- vide a bit of relief to those devastated by the torna- does on December 10. "People throughout the com- munity stopped by the church all week to donate," says Rev. Steve Hamilton, Pastor of Petersburg Naza- rene Church. "We are blessed to live in a community that is so giving and wants to help others," said Ham- ilton. Besides household goods, food and cleaning supplies, almost $5000 was collected to help those in need in the community of Mayfield, Ky., and the surrounding hard-hit areas. In association with the Southwest Indiana District Church of the Nazarene and their churches, three box trucks were loaded Monday, and collected items and monies, including those from Petersburg, were taken to western Kentucky. United Way Grant totals $25,000 for eight NFPs Krista Robinette, executive director for United Way of Pike County presented $25,000 in 2021 Deployment Grant Awards to eight Pike County non-profit organizations. Grants ranged from $500 to $10,000, with Pike County Christian Assistance receiving $10,000, Bread of Life Ministry $4,000, TRI-CAP $3,800, Pike Coun- ty Public Library $2,880, Senior and Family Services $2,000, T TR Haven Over the Hilltop $1,070, Jeffer- son Township Fire Department $750 and Generations (Meals on Wheels) $500.
