The Chargers seemed to not be able to pull their strength together this quarter, and Tell City scored again, leaving the score at the end of the first quarter 0 -21. The second half started and the Char- gers still had not pulled in to hold the Marksmen or take the offen- sive leap and make any goals. Marksmen ran the field this quarter, scoring four more touchdowns and following them up with four good kicks. By the end of the second quar- ter, the score was 0 -49 Marks- men's lead. When the third quarter be- gan, the Chargers seemed to come out more determined than they did in the first half of the game. They pulled in and stood their ground, de- fending their territory. On a pass thrown by the Chargers, toward the end of the quar- ter, the Marksmen jumped for the interception and ran in 30 yards for the touchdown, making the score 0 -56. Char- gers held the Marksman for the rest of the quarter, keep- ing the score in place. In the beginning of the fourth quarter, Pike Central reinforced their defensive hold on the Marksmen, keep- ing them scoreless. With 7:25 on the scoreboard, senior Wyatt Frasure ran the ball 23 yards for the touchdown, scor- ing Pike Central's first touch- down of the game. The Char- gers then followed this up with a good pass from fresh- man Matthew Meadows to ju- nior Braden Howald for the ex- tra two points, make the score 8 -56. This seemed to pull the Chargers out of their current funk in the game, and they began to play harder than be- fore. The problem, however, was that they were now in the fourth quarter and playing on a running clock, which ran out, leaving the game score 8 -56. Head Coach Kelly Brashear commented on the game, say- ing, "I've said all preseason, and the first part of this first half of the season here about how happy that we have been with the kids' effort, being such a young team and really not having the football knowl- edge that you do as a senior or junior as you grow through the high school process. Tonight was one of those nights where I could not say that about our effort and execution." "It was a little bit disappoint- ing, on our overall total effort, especially in the first half and ear- ly in the first half. We just made too many mistakes. I don't think in the first half we blocked very well, up front. I don't think we ran the ball, threw the ball or caught the ball very well. So not a lot of positives that we can come away with from the first half. Defensively, in the first half, we were getting beat up front, our linebackers were overflowing, our defen- sive backs were letting receiv- ers get behind us and that is a football one-on-one, no, no. So on both sides of the ball, and I didn't think our kicking game was very strong tonight either." "So you put those three things together, they are the three parts of a football game, offense, defense and special teams. If you're kind of stink- ing it up in all three of those phases, good things are not going to happen, so that's where we were at halftime." "Second half, like we've ex- perienced several times this year, they were playing some younger kids, junior varsi- ty guys, which are more of our age. We did some better things, but still made crucial mistakes, and we let them score on us one time in the second half. But offensive- ly, I thought we picked it up. We blocked better, we read through better and we ran better. They kind of took the challenge that we gave them a halftime and took it to heart, and decided they want to play a little bit." "But, you know, this might be one of those games where you just throw the film in the trash, and put it behind you, try to learn from your mis- takes, and get better next week, each and every day." The Chargers are now 1- 4 overall and 0 -3 in the PAC, making them seventh in the conference. They will play their next game at Forest Park on Friday, October 8 at 7 p.m. Braden Howald, Charger junior, is taken to the ground, as freshman Conner Loveless and other teammates attempted to help him, during the Pike Central football game at Tell City on Friday, October 1.
