This style of photography is great for the person who doesn't think of himself as creative, but enjoys mechanics and the chance to explore familiar places from a different perspective. Southern Indiana is great for drone photographers because there are ver y few airports, giving pilots lots of places to fly. Drones offer not just photos but videos and the ability to make topographical maps and 3D models. Particularly in the fall, southern Pike County's Sugar Ridge and State Park areas make excellent photos, he said. For the beginning pilot-photographer, Church advised lighting makes a huge difference, as does humidity. Less humidity creates a clearer picture. "You can get really good pictures in early morning or sunset, at magic hour. Those make fantastic photos. When it's clear, I can sometimes see miles." Flying 400 feet up, unexpected things can happen to equipment, so Church always tells beginners to start out with a small, cheap drone. Without all the frills more expensive drones have, cheap drones teach the pilot how to fly them and are much less of a loss when something goes wrong. After a pilot has learned to fly a cheap drone really well, he'll be able to handle the more expensive. "Then when the autopilot goes haywire, you can still get it home," he said. "It makes you learn to fly it. It won't have fancy return-to-home features on it." If a person were looking in on Church flying his drone, they'd see he has a typical RC aircraft controller with an iPad attached, where he can see a map, speed, batter y life and what the camera sees in real time. On his current drone, a DGI Phantom Pro, he can con- trol exposure, aperture, F-stop and shutter speed. "I can compose my shot, focus it and get the settings I want," he said. He added that anyone using a drone to make money will have to go through licensing by the FAA, called a Part 107 Certificate. "Flying for fun is a lot less restrictive," he said. "When it's clear I can sometimes see miles and miles." — Jeremy Church 10 Backyard Adventures 2021
