The county hosts no less than half a dozen festivals each year, and between festivals, visitors can check out local attractions. There are plenty of hidden mar vels to discover, one-of-a-kind restaurants and quaint shops awaiting you in your search for fun and relaxation. VISITORS CENTER Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana Indiana's manufacturing heritage is celebrated at Toy- ota Motor Manufacturing's Visitors Center. Completely handicap accessible, the tour utilizes a tram that makes touring the 4.3 million square feet of plant comfortable for visitors of all abilities. Visitors can follow a vehicle from headlight to rear bumper around the plant, as well as see the museum at the entrance area. More than 10,000 visitors have taken the tour. Admission is free, but hours var y, so look online at www.tourtoyotaindiana.com for more information. PRINCETON DEPOT The county's only remaining train depot, Princeton Depot features a railway museum and a restored train caboose. Stop at the depot first, since, as home to the Gibson County Visitors Center, it offers a wealth of tour and special event information. QUILT TRAIL Gibson County has created a quilt trail featuring 225 hand-painted blocks at locations that show off pictur- esque landscapes and historic landmarks, among other attractions. Maps are available at the Princeton Train De- pot, a historic stop in its own right, and the headquarters of the county's Visitors and Tourism Dept., or on mobile devices. Quilters and Americana admirers will enjoy spot- ting the blocks around the highways and scenic routes of the county. A quilt block quest is a relaxing way to spend a day in Gibson County and get to know the area. Visit www.gibsoncountyin.org for maps and more information about the trail. LYLES STATION Historic School & Museum L yles Station Historic School and Museum is one of the last remaining African-American settlements in the Hoosier state, established by free black men in the 1800s. Located west of Princeton, the Heritage Class- room provides students the opportunity to experience a day in the life of school children in the early 1900s, and the museum also has early farming equipment, a period garden and special events that show early American life. Go online at www.lylesstation.org for more information. HOPKINS FAMILY PARK Hopkins Family Park offers places to picnic and spend quiet time. Just off the Princeton I-69 exit at the intersection of County Roads 250 South and 750 East, the Hopkins Park is still a work in progress, but several features are finished and open for free to all visitors. The park recently won a grant that will allow for building a water feature, bathrooms and better trails over the next few years, but currently it's a popular area for runners. NEW GENERATION DAIRY FARM March through October, New Generation Dair y Farm's 80-acre operation in Owensville takes visitors through milking, from farm to the dinner table. Present- ly, the dair y milks more than 1,200 Holsteins, three times a day. For tours, call 812-729-7300. FAIRGROUNDS The Gibson County Fairgrounds has hosted festivals, con- certs, tractor pulls, trade shows, consumer shows, antique swaps, church events, auctions, flea markets, gun shows, car shows, horse shows and rodeos, throughout the year, besides the Gibson County 4-H Fair, a full week of entertainment. COCKRUM HALL Visit James Cockrum's Oakland City home, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. Born in 1799 in North Carolina, Cockrum and his son, William Mon- roe Cockrum, shielded enslaved blacks seeking freedom along the Underground Railroad. Cockrum's home was restored in 2002 and is located on the peaceful Oakland City University campus, at 38 Lucretia Street, Oakland City. For more information, call 812-749-1228. COVERED BRIDGES Bridge enthusiasts can explore the 1875-era Red Bridge over Big Bayou Creek in southern Gibson County and The Wheeling Bridge, which crosses the Patoka River, northeast of Princeton. Built in 1877, the Wheeling Bridge has been featured on ever ything from lighters and Swiss-army knives to paintings, local historians say. COUNTY COURTHOUSE Just a few blocks down from the Princeton Depot is the most significant historical structure in the county. If the courthouse looks familiar, that's because it was used as the model for the Dept. 56 Original Snow Village Court- house. Visitors can relax in the gazebo on the court- house lawn, browse the memorials around the perimeter, and walk across the street to access all the shops around the Princeton square. Princeton's downtown organization hosts frequent events at the courthouse square, too. OVERVIEW Gibson County Backyard Adventures 2021 7
