Poplar Street, Petersburg One of the most enlightening books of the Bible, and indeed of all literature, is St. Paul's great Epistle to the Romans. Paul was by nature and training a logician, perhaps the greatest logician of all time, and in this case, his words were Spirit-inspired, so that we have in his Epistle to the Romans a powerful logical argument about God and man, condemnation and justification. It is won- derful thus to have God's plan of salvation ex- plained for us. This is all too lacking in mod- ern evangelism. The doctrinal argument of Romans begins with a demonstration of the moral depravity of man. It says, even to the self-righteous: It is important to remind ourselves that free- dom of religion cannot be taken for granted. It requires constant attention. Sadly, Ameri- cans do not understand separation of church and state. Most think the statement has some- thing to do with our Constitution. The ACLU and elite media express these words written in a letter expressing the personal opinion of one man. They repeat it so often, without tell- ing the origin of the statement, that some actu- ally think it has something to do with the Con- stitution. We must constantly affirm the distor- tion of this single statement or else people be- lieve it. Even this man's opinion does not mean we should separate religion from public life. Religion and moral convictions are not an alien or threatening force in public life. The great majority of educated Americans know morality has its roots in the Christian religion. Throughout history there have been those who hate the values taught by Christianity. We are all created in the image of God and are accountable to Him. Every effort should be made in government and society in general to cultivate the princi- ples taught by the Ten Commandments. Hon- esty, integrity, compassion, charity, respect and marriage are values that have made Amer- ica great. The elite media and many political leaders seek to destroy all that made America great. We must reject the idea that tolerance supersedes the moral law of God. Let us re- view our heritage in this time of social activ- ism and protect our nation from the evil forces of socialism and corrupt politicians. Stam Greetings to all you readers. We hope you have had a good week and are having a good one so far. It has been another rather uneventful week for us so I thank God for taking care of us. It was cool during the morning and it was com- fortable in the afternoons all week. I did get some things done such as picking up limbs and weed eating. The grass is growing fast right now, but it will slow down soon. Once the rain slows we will again see ourselves wanting a shower to wa- ter our plants. Our grandson has sure felt better lately but he had to go for a normal check up and a couple of shots. They gave him the shots in each leg and he was sore from them. He had a t- ball game and his legs were hurting, but he did a good job batting and even stopped a couple of grounders. All of his teammates are improving and they are coached by some good people who have lots of patience with them. It was windy and cool sitting out in lawn chairs watching their game. Finally got our patio cleaned off and the drive- way between house and shop blown free of ma- ple helicopters. It is all coming together as each day I get something else done. Our Lions meeting was last Thursday evening at Randy's Americana and we had several bul- let items on our agenda and still didn't get ev- erything talked about. There are several proj- ects coming up and two of them involve vehi- cles. On July 9 at 5:30 p.m. we plan to have our car show at the Village Inn. We will present tro- phies around 7 p.m. On August 28 we plan to have a "every day driv- er show" where you don't bring a show car unless you want to because there will categories drawn by O Reilly Auto parts store. The first key for useful- ness in God's Kingdom is hu- mility. Pride cuts us off from God (and from other people) and deceives us into thinking we can do God's work with- out God's power. When we re- ly on the Holy Spirit, howev- er, He sanctifies us and em- powers us so we can be ef- fective tools is God's hands. But there is a second key, and that is faith, faith that God is sovereign, and that He is at work, even if we can't see it. Habakkuk complained to God that evil people were winning the day. But God replied, "I will work a work in your days which you would not believe, though it were told you"(Ha- bakkuk 1:5). God is at work, even in the midst of the problems, pessi- mism and frustrations of our day. He alone is sovereign and that is why we can trust Him, even when the way seems dark.
