The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, May 19, 2021 A-9 Snipes arrested on meth charges after traffic stop By Andy Heuring A rural Petersburg wom- an was arrested after police stopped her for having a tail- light out. Tonya M. Snipes, 45, of 2121 N. CR 700 W., Petersburg, was arrested on charges of posses- sion of methamphetamine less than five grams, posses- sion of paraphernalia and op- erating a vehicle while intoxi- cated (refusal). Pike County Deputy Jared Simmons said he and Dep- uty Cody Jones were sitting near CR 100 W., off of High- way 64, when they saw a pas- senger car with a taillight out and stopped it. Simmons said when he talk- ed with Snipes, who was driv- ing the car, he noticed the odor of alcohol. She failed field sobriety tests and was placed in handcuffs. Depu- ty Simmons said Snipes then asked him to give her cell- phone to her passenger, Clif- ford Donaldson. When he got the phone out of her pocket, he found a glass meth smok- ing device containing a burnt residue that field tested posi- tive for meth. According to Simmons' re- port, Snipes immediately said "we found it, we found it" and said they were going to throw it away, but forgot to. She also refused a chemi- cal test, saying she would fail it for marijuana, according to Simmons' report. Snipes was taken into custo- dy and her passenger, Donald- son, who was not licensed to drive, was given a ride home. Ky. mother arrest on drug and child neglect charges By Andy Heuring A mother was arrested on child neglect and two oth- ers were arrested on drug charges after being stopped for speeding. Katherin Blanchard, 27, of Beaver Dam, Ky., was arrest- ed on charges of neglect of a dependent, maintaining a common nuisance and posses- sion of marijuana early Mon- day morning. Also arrested were Larry Smith and Ashley Veenstra, both on charges of posses- sion of marijuana and visit- ing a common nuisance, and Smith on a warrant from Van- derburgh County. Pike County Deputy Sher- iff Jared Simmons said he was running stationary radar at about 1 a.m. Monday at CR 300 E. and Highway 64, when he saw a vehicle driving 65 mph in a 55 zone. Simmons said he attempted to stop the vehicle, but before he could catch up to it, the ve- hicle, driven by Smith, turned into a driveway. Deputy Simmons said he pulled into the driveway with his lights on and talked with Smith, who admitted he didn't have a driver's license and probably had an active warrant out of Vanderburgh County. Simmons said while talking to Smith, he noticed the odor of burnt marijuana in the ve- hicle. Smith's front seat pas- senger was Veenstra, while Blanchard, who owned the ve- hicle, was in the backseat with her four-year-old child. A search of the vehicle lo- cated two backpacks. One was found in the floorboard under the child's feet. It contained a glass jar with a plastic bag in the jar. The plastic bag had a green leafy substance identi- fied as marijuana, along with a marijuana grinder, accord- ing to Simmons' report. In the back storage area of the SUV, another backpack was located. It had a partially full two-liter Coke bottle with marijuana residue on it. Deputy Simmons said all three denied any knowledge of marijuana in the vehicle. All three were taken into custody. Otwell man arrested on child pornography charge By Andy Heuring A rural Otwell man was ar- rested on a charge of child ex- ploitation/child pornography, a level 5 felony, after his girl- friend found a picture of him near a child. Jesy Evitts, 28, of 3595 N. CR 100 E., Otwell, was arrest- ed on May 13 by Chief Deputy Dallas Killian. Deputy Killian said Evitts' girlfriend went to the Pike County Jail on Wednes- day, May 12 and told police she wanted to report a pos- sible child molesting. She then showed Killian a pic- ture from Evitts' phone. She said she had gone through Evitts' phone while he slept and found a picture of him putting his penis near or on a toddler's head while the tod- dler slept, according to Dep- uty Killian's report. She said she woke him up and threw him out. She then played a phone message from Evitts to her for police. According to Killian's re- port, Evitts said he had been hooked on pedophilia since he was 14 years old and was sui- cidal during the call. Killian said he and Sheriff Kent Johnson began looking for Evitts and eventually lo- cated him in the river bottoms near Otwell. He was taken in- to custody and his phone tak- en into evidence. According to Killian's report, Evitts was taken to an interview room and said he wanted to talk to a lawyer. "All questioning stopped and he was taken upstairs," said Killian's report. Evitts was then preliminarily charged with child exploita- tion. Pfizer COVID vaccine available for 12 and up By Andy Heuring The Pfizer vaccine is now available in Pike County.
