It was a very difficult time for her, but she knew she could lean not on her own under- standing, but rather on God and trust in Him (Proverbs 3:5 -6). If you have not heard her powerful testimony, visit our website www.crossroad- soc.org and go to the sermon links to listen; you will not be disappointed and it will revive your trust in God. This Sunday, we plan anoth- er special service as we honor our graduate, Ellie Pancake, who is graduating from Pike Central High School. We hope that you will be able to join us this Sunday. Often these believ- ers would scratch the secret symbol of a fish in the ground to help them identify other Christians. Not only was fish a common food of the day, of- ten used and referenced by Jesus during His ministry, but the letters which make up the Greek word for "fish" ( I- ch-th-y-s) I-Jesus, ch-Christ, th-God, y-Son, s-Savior. The name of Jesus brings power and life and salvation. In a word, the name of Je- sus captures the central mes- sage of the Christian faith. Together with the symbol of the fish, this emblem of the name of Jesus in the middle of a fish reminds the world it isn't about religion, but a rela- tionship with the Living God through Jesus Christ. I won- der if the symbol of a fish is what Jesus was scratching in the dirt when the people were going to stone the woman for adultery? This they said test- ing him, that they might have something of which to accuse Him. "But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with His finger, as though He did not hear" ( John 8:6). There is no truth that Christ insisted on more frequently, both with His disciples and with strangers who came seeking His help, than the ab- solute necessity of faith, with its unlimited possibilities. Ex- perience has taught us that there is nothing in which we fall so short as a simple and ab- solute trust in God to fulfill in us all that He has promised. To have a life in the abiding pres- ence requires a life of unceas- ing faith. Think for a moment of what the marks of true faith are. First of all, faith counts on God to do all He has promised. It is not content with taking hold of some promises; it seeks noth- ing less than to claim every promise that God has made and does so in its largest and fullest meaning. Sensing its own nothingness and utter im- potence, it trusts the power of an almighty God to work His wonders in the heart in which He dwells. The kind of faith which leads to the abiding pres- ence demands a mastery of one's whole being. Experi- encing Christ's presence all day long is such a wonderful privilege that it calls us to for- sake many things we former- ly thought were lawful. The blessed friend who accom- panies us, the joy and light of our life, must be Lord of all. Then faith will be able to claim and experience the words of the Master, "I am with you al- ways"—Andrew Murray.
