The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, Feburar y 10, 2021 A-9 the CROSSROADS BAPTIST CHURCH 2789 S. State Rd 57 Oakland City You are invited to visit our church this Sunday. Remem- ber our service times: Sunday school 9:30 a.m. CST; worship service 10 :30 a.m. Hope to see you there. On the calendar this week is our weekly Wednesday Bi- ble study and children's activ- ities. The study, Twelve Ex- traordinary Women, will con- tinue our discussion of Rahab. Rahab is an interesting char- acter to study. She had a hor- rible reputation but was still a person that God used for His purpose. That fact reveals that God has a special pur- pose for me and you as well. Despite our faults, flaws, rep- utation, etc. God can still use us for His glory. Join us this Wednesday at 6 p.m. CST for the study on Rahab and chil- dren's activities. It is all pre- ceded by a meal at 5:30 p.m. If you missed the first week, don't worry, we'll do a recap before proceeding into this week's study. Hope to see you Wednesday. Last Sunday, we ended our series examining Ecclesias- tes. Therefore, this Sunday, we transition to a new text. But, if you missed any mes- sage from our series in Eccle- siastes, then visit our website www.crossroadsoc.org. Just click on the sermon tab and all the messages will appear for you to listen. Have a great and safe, warm week. Main Street Petersburg 812-354-6775 One of my favorite lines from a book, comes from the Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis. Lucy asks their new friend Mr. Beaver, "Is he safe? " inquiring about this king they had heard of named Aslan. Mr. Beaver, pithy an- swer, "Oh no he's not safe, but he's good." Sometimes I won- der if we are just hoping that life in Christ will be safe. We can come to him, get salva- tion, feel good, and eventual- ly go to heaven when the time comes. However, that's rare- ly the case. Imagine the rich young rule or the other young man who came begging to fol- low Jesus, but once confront- ed by the reality that the fol- lowers of Jesus lacked a bed and shelter, or even that one would have to sell everything he had. The truth is, following Jesus wasn't safe then, and it isn't safe now. Still to this day when he calls a man, he bids him, come and die. Following Jesus means actively dying to ourselves and living for him. We have to decide that there is no safe shallow end follow- ing him. To enjoy a rich life in Christ, we have to cut the rope. "And now abideth faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love" (I Corinthians 13:13). In these troublesome times, when bitterness and prejudice abound, it is hard to remember that love triumphs. Thousands of years ago, Christ was un- justly tried and cruelly nailed to a wooden cross. Our awe of Christ on the cross lies in the fact that in the midst of public scorn, de- rision and unbearable pain, He prayed for those who crucified Him. His love sur- passed all the powers of ha- tred. When crime and violence make a mockery of all that Je- sus Christ lived for and taught, then remember Golgotha and focus on God's love. You will find peace and calm that will make you aware of the immor- tality and invincibility of love. Walking with God. Hwy. 61 Spurgeon Pastor Cell 812.202.8903 or church office 812-922-8215 Church service 9 a.m.; Fri- day Bible study at 1 p.m. Job 7:20 : "If I have sinned, what have I done to you, you who see everything we do? Why have you made me your target? Have I become a bur- den to you? " Job's story gives us a way of responding to the mystery of unexplained pain and evil. By describing the suffering and confusion of one of God's best examples of goodness and mercy (ch. 25), we gain an al- ternative to the inflexible rule of sowing and reaping (4:7-8). By providing a backstory of sa- tanic mayhem (ch. 1) and an afterword (42:7-17) from the God who would one day allow His Son to bear our sins, the story of Job gives a reason to live by faith rather than sight. How do you feel about a God who sometimes allows suffer- ing without explanation? How does the story of Job help you understand this? "God of creation, Giver of life, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, help us to trust You more than our own eyes and hearts"—Amen. So many trials come into our lives and along with the business of life. These things can easily choke out the Life of God in us. But praise God, "But seek ye first the King- dom of God, and His righteous- ness; and all these things will be added unto you" (Matthew 6:33). What things will be add- ed? God's order back into our lives—a peace that passes all understanding—He is in con- trol. Facebook: White River Chapel UMC, Jeff Pinney.
