He followed that up with his tenth basket and four of five free throws in the last two minutes of action. Pike Central trailed 12-8 at the first stop and played even in the second, with three balls courtesy of Kendric Sorgius, Peyton Howald, Julian Gish and Sean Hanselman. Num- ber 13 got the last score of the first half to get the boys to a 26 -22 deficit. Sorgius and Gish were the mainstay offensively in the third quarter, with Sorgi- us netting three baskets and assists to Gish for the lead twice, with shots beyond the arc during that stanza. On defense, seniors Ethan Gor- by and Hunter Taylor each blocked Evansville Christian shots, but Dunham picked it up that quarter with five two-pointers and a 45 -38 ad- vantage to end the third quar- ter. The Chargers were spear-headed by Hanselman with a pair of baskets, a three pointer and three of four from the line, but the scoring surge didn't include halting the Christian offense, who spread the floor with four scorers in the final minutes. Charger coach Hunter El- liott said, "It was a close game most of the way. We didn't do a good job following the game plan on Dunham. He is really their guy and we just weren't able to slow him down. Offen- sively, they played us a zone and it caused us to be passive early on. "Kendric Sorgius keeps get- ting better and better. He led us with 17 points and six re- bounds. I thought Julian Gish played a good game as well, with 15 points, four rebounds and five assists. This team has skill, but we are lacking the discipline to do all the small things right now. We have to consistently do all those small things." Pike Central goes to a PAC match with the Tecumseh Braves at home on Tuesday after press deadline and then will host Tell City on Friday. The junior varsity won their preliminary contest 34-21, with Alex Clark leading the way with 11 points, includ- ing seven in the first quarter. Ethan Meadows, Chase Rid- ao, Braden Howald and Clark kicked it up a notch with 13 second-quarter markers, while the defense held Chris- tian to three points. The boys then kept the Eagles to eight third-quarter points and blanked them in the fourth for the 34-21 win. Clark's 11 points was followed by Rid - ao with nine, five each for Meadors and Jagar Dent, and four for Howald. In the sixth grade contest, Scott and Wiscaver each had five points and Harker had two. The fifth grade was a close game, with Fort Branch posting a 26 -17 first half that held despite 23 second-half Charger points courtesy of Wiscaver, VanMeter, Scott and Harker. Wiscaver and VanMeter each had 14 points, Harker six, Shoultz four and Scott two. "I know that South Spen- cer is a veteran team, with a senior laden starting line-up, and we are starting mostly freshmen and sophomores— but that just doesn't matter if we can't play hard on both ends of the floor on every pos- session. "Until we can do that, we cannot beat good teams." South Spencer outscored Pike Central 18 -10 in the fourth quarter, pouring home seven of 11 shots at the bas- ket, including a three-point basket, to go along with three of four free-throw shooting on the offensive end of the play- ing floor. While on the defen- sive end of the hardwood, the winners held the Chargers to three made baskets in nine at- tempts, including one of two from behind the three-point arc and three of four from the charity stripe to account for the final 65 -40 score. Pike Central connected on just four of 16 field goal at- tempts in the second half, but the visitors did make 12 of 16 free throw opportunities in the second 16 minutes of play. The Chargers committed 10 turnovers in the second half, but eight of those mistakes came in the fourth quarter, while the Rebels coughed the basketball up just five times in the final two periods, three in the third stanza and two in the final eight minutes of play. Three Rebels notched dou- ble-digit scoring in the fray, led by 6'3" senior Chase Gar- rett with 20 counters, and fol- lowed by 6' classmate Jace Kelly with 13 markers, and 6'4" junior Holton Compton with 11 tallies. Kobe Bartlett, a 6'4" senior, chipped in with another nine points for the winners. The Chargers were led in scoring by 6'4" sopho- more Kendric Sorgius with 11 points, the only Pike Cen- tral player to score in dou- ble figures; however, 6' se- nior Ethan Gorby netted nine markers, and 5'11" classmate Sean Hanselman put home seven counters. Julian Gish, a 6' freshman added five tallies to the PSHS side of the scor- ing ledger. Quade Morton, a 5'9" fresh- man, hit a three-point basket to account for three points for the visitors, while 5'8" junior Ashton Evans and 6'2" soph- omore Peyton Howald each tossed in a two-point hoop. Alex Clark, a 6'1" junior, put home one of two free throw opportunities to close out the Charger scoring. Pike Central connected on 14 of 18 (77.8 percent) free throw attempts, while South Spencer hit eight of 13 (61.5 percent) attempts from the unguarded line. The loss leaves the Char- gers with a 2-14 season re- cord, including 0 -10 in the conference, and the win gives the Rebels a 11-2 mark on the 2020 -21 hardwood campaign, including an unblemished 6 -0 record in PAC play. PCHS senior Ethan Gorby (11) puts home two of his nine points in last Thursday's 65-40 loss to South Spencer in Rio in a Pocket Athletic Conference (PAC) battle. Kendric Sorgius goes up for a shot at Evansville Christian on Saturday. He came down with 17 points, including a three ball and four of four from the line. Julian Gish was right behind Sorgius on Saturday with 15 points, including a trio of shots from beyond the arc. Jagar Dent got five fourth-quarter points to assist the junior varsity to a 34-21 win at Evansville Christian on Saturday night. Stock Up on Warm and Cozy. Years of comfort. Years of savings.
