CALL TODAY 812-354-2004 Mon-Fri 7AM-8PM Saturday 7AM-2PM 812-354-2004 Alpha Delta Chapter met Dec. 1 remotely The Alpha Delta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Soci- ety International met Dec. 1, 2020, via ZOOM. The hostess- es were the NE Dubois teach- ers and retirees. The meet- ing opened with a Christmas prayer by Joan Weathers. The hostesses were thanked for their work in planning the meeting and for the beautiful and creative Christmas cards mailed to each member. Each Christmas season the hostesses choose a charity to support. This year they chose to make donations to CASA (Court Appointed Special Ad- vocates) in both Daviess and Dubois Counties. Diane Ken- drick, as a CASA volunteer, discussed the purposes of the organization. The volunteers work directly with children in the court system. They lis- ten to the needs and concerns of the children and represent their interests to the judge. A person must go through an in- depth training program before becoming a volunteer. Diane recommended becoming a vol- unteer as a way of making a real difference in the lives of children. Ruthanne Burkhart led members in a Christmas toast with a quote from Charles Dickens' A Christmas Car- ol, …as spoken by Tiny Tim, "God bless us everyone." Following the toast Rhonda York attempted to lead mem- bers in singing Jingle Bells. That doesn't work so well on ZOOM, but it gave everyone a good laugh. Several people shared during "Share Your Best" time. The next meeting will be on March 2, 2021, with North Daviess teachers and retirees as hostesses. Meeting place/ style will be determined clos- er to that date. Pisgah General Baptist Church in Augusta since 2015. Before coming to Mt. Pisgah, Blackwell spent his time serving and ministering in many different ways. Blackwell grew up in Winslow and at- tended almost every church in town at some point. However, he did not become serious about his faith until 1997. In 1997, a fellow employee at the landfill where Blackwell still works invited him to go to church. On Sunday morning, he felt the Lord convicting his heart; though, as he said, he went to the restroom instead of the altar. Determined not to accept the invitation for the evening service, Black- well still found himself back at the church and gave his life to Christ at the Glezen Revival Center. Blackwell met his wife, Dana, at the Petersburg Dairy Queen while she was working and he was dating another girl. A fter he and the other girl broke up, he and Dana started seeing each other and married in July of 2000. A few years in- to their marriage, after attending the Muren Church of God, the Blackwells began going to the Glezen Revival Cen- ter regularly. It was during his time at the Glezen Re- vival Center when Blackwell was called into ministry, though others in is life had seen the potential in him years be- fore this. While in high school, Blackwell was good friends with his track and field coach Mike Whitten. Later, Whitten told Blackwell, "You're going to be a pastor. When you ran for me, I knew you were going to be a pastor." At 18 years old, Blackwell was visit- ed by a Baptist minister he knew who of- fered to give Blackwell all of his minis- try books. Blackwell responded, "I don't know why I'd ever need them," though now he wishes he had taken them. A fter being called into ministry, Black- well became the youth pastor of the Glezen Revival Center in 2002, where he served for three years. He obtained his minister's license in 2004 and was or- dained in 2007. Unfortunately, in 2005, Blackwell in- jured his knee. He was off work for two and a half years and endured 10 knee sur- geries over those years. While stuck at home on the couch, he started to become depressed and had a suicidal thought. "I knew where it came from, so I took that thought captive, and then the Lord dropped in my spirit, 'To- day's preparation is for your tomorrow.' I knew I was called into ministry, but at that moment, at that time, I really felt like that was a big conformation," Blackwell said. In 2007, Blackwell took ministry cor- respondence courses through Rehma Training center, based in Oklahoma, while he was off work. He said learning through books and online was not diffi- cult, as he enjoyed the types of books he had to read. Over the next few years, he served the Lord and shared his word by teaching the Twelve Steps of Recovery program at the Petersburg Lighthouse from 2005 to 2008, and participating in the jail min- istry at the Pike County Jail from 2007 to 2009. Blackwell got into the jail ministry when Steve Freeland invited him to come. "I just thought I was coming to help him. He threw me out to the lions, and I [did] it ever since then," Blackwell said. He start- ed out with a Bible study at the library with two people, and, within a month, Blackwell was preaching to 36 people in the indoor recreation area. He also served as an intern pastor for three months and an assistant pas- tor starting in 2006 at the Glezen Reviv- al Center. While ministering as the as- sistant pastor, Blackwell was traveling around to fill in as a pastor at several churches. During this time, Josh Luker, a friend of Blackwell's and the pastor of Mt. Pis- gah, stepped down from his position, and Blackwell was asked to fill in for a Sun- day. A fter preaching, he was invited to re- turn the next Sunday as well. While giv- ing handshakes and hugs during offer- ing, Blackwell was asked by two people to put in to be the pastor. Blackwell prayed about the decision, though he and his wife were pretty sure they knew what God's answer was going to be. In 2015, he put in to be pastor, was voted in unanimously and has been there ever since. "We love it," he said of the church. "It seems like people are very open, and they have a lot of zeal, and it's awesome. God's spirit just really moves because of the love that is there. Love for one an- other. I honestly don't see how it can be any better." "I just love the Lord with all my heart, and I just love people. And I know that, as I can be used to touch people's live, it blesses my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ," said Blackwell. He went on to say he wants to be sure to preach the word and often refers back to I Corinthians 2:2, which reads, "For I am determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified." When COVID-19 hit, the Mt. Pisgah church closed down for a month. "That month really did damage… There are so many [who] get used to just watching on- line…" Blackwell said, though he does know there are members of the congrega- tion who do need to stay home for safety purposes. While the congregation is back in the building, Blackwell is no longer do- ing Wednesday nights, though he would like to get them started again. Blackwell and his wife have two kids, Carter, 13, and Kinley, 10. They live in the old parsonage of Muren Church of God in Ayrshire, which is about five miles away from Mt. Pisgah and about one mile away from Blackwell's place of employment, Waste Management in Winslow, where he runs heavy machinery 60 hours a week. Blackwell said his dream is to be a full- time pastor, so he could devote more time to the church and his family. Stock Up on Warm and Cozy. Years of comfort. Years of savings. The year's best offer.
