POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info A group of Unit 100 Ladies Auxiliary officers were installed last Monday night, Sept. 21, at the Cherryville Post 100 build- ing on Pink Street. Outgoing President Jean Skibo opened the meeting with the usual American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) protocol. After- wards, Mrs. Skibo introduced District 13 ALA President (from Unit 82), Linda Quinlan, from Shelby, who formally swore in the officers. After the installation was completed, Mrs. Quinlan said she gave some remarks and guidance to Unit 100 members and congratulated them for achieving more than 50 per- cent of their membership goal already for the year – that goal being 87 members. "I presented Lynette a hand- made patriotic wreath along with my good wishes for her success as the new President," noted Mrs. Quinlan. Quinlan said Monica Lock- wood was the newly-elected Unit Treasurer, but since she was out of town, Jill Parker- Puett stood in for her during the swearing in ceremony. At the conclusion of Mrs. Quinlan's remarks, new Presi- dent Christensen took over the meeting proceedings, introduc- ing two guests; Sons of the Legion (SAL) Squadron 100 Commander Dan Hausler, and Legion Post 100 Commander Mike Robinson. Members enjoyed refresh- ments after the meeting. The total Unit 100 officers for 2020 are: Lynette Christensen – President; Jean Skibo – Vice President; Tammy Snider – Secretary; Monica Lockwood – Treasurer; and Ann Craft – Chaplain. Mrs. Skibo also noted that, as is the custom of the Auxiliary, school supplies were brought in by members at the first meeting in September. "After items were sorted, Ly- nette delivered some to Cher- ryville Elementary School and I delivered some to W. Blaine Beam Intermediate School," she said. "Our Unit had a large assortment of items including composition notebooks, ruled notebook paper, pencils, pens, markers, glue, and more essen- tial items for the teachers and students." Skibo continued, "During a previous meeting, Jill Puett suggested that we begin col- lecting items for the veterans in the homeless shelter in Ashe- ville. Clothing, coats, shoes, and more were brought in and sorted. President Lynette Chris- tensen delivered the clothing items and personal care items on Wednesday, Sept. 23." A light meal was prepared and served by Ann Craft and Susan Eason. The meeting was adjourned after Chaplain Ann Craft offered prayer. Mrs. Skibo has been the Unit's President for three or four consecutive years, she said. She joined at the special invita- tion of late Councilwoman Nell Parker, mother of Jill Parker- Puett. "That has been more than 10 years ago, I believe," she said. Skibo continued, "My role in Unit 100 is an honor, and what an honor it was to do what we did keeping our veterans at the forefront of our efforts." New President Christensen said it was a great honor for her to be able to continue the tradi- tion. "This is my first time as Pres- ident," she said, adding she has helped her sister, Monica Lock- wood, with endeavors for the Post 100 American Legion and the Unit 100 Ladies Auxiliary. Christensen, a 28-year resi- dent of Cherryville, said she is a bit apprehensive of her role only in that it is all new to her. She is excited however, and noted she wants to be a good leader, and wants to see more younger people; younger veterans, get involved with the Legion and its activities. "Sometimes it does take a village to get things done, and I want to see more people get involved. I have a goal to do a video, or DVD, of stories from our Legion, Ladies Auxiliary, and SAL people, about the his- tory of the Cherryville Ameri- can Legion. Those need to be recorded and kept for history's sake," she said. 2020-2021 Unit 100 AL Ladies Auxiliary officers installed New 2020 Unit 100 Ladies Auxiliary President Lynette Chris- tensen.
