On Sept. 3, 2020, the Boys & Girls Club of Cleveland County (BGCCC) began a partnership with Cleveland County Schools to open a new service site at Casar Elementary School. "Our goal is to provide rural Cleveland County families with a closer-to-home option for out-of-school time care," says BGCCC Executive Director Josh Propst. "The new club site gives parents from more rural parts of the county the flexibility to return to work while offering their children a productive, focused and safe use of their time during days when they are not participating in face-to-face instruction at school." The community response has been very positive. The program is currently serving more than 20 children and is growing every day, according to Propst. Students are divided into two cohorts with one group of students coming the first two days of the week, all chil - dren learning virtually on Wednesday, and the second group of students attending classes on Thursday and Friday. "Casar Elementary has been blessed with the addition of our on-site Boys and Girls Club," says Dr. Jason Parker, Casar Elementary School principal. "This addition has given our school community much-needed access to quality childcare in Casar. The club program goals align perfectly with our school's goal of educating the whole child. Since the Club has opened, I have already seen a posi - tive impact. Without a doubt, the addi- tion of the Club is a win-win for our wonderful school. I know great things are ahead because of this collaborative effort." The program at Casar Elementary represents the fourth Boys & Girls Club service site in Cleveland County. The response to Cleveland County's childcare needs during the Covid-19 pandemic has effectively doubled the BGCCC's staffing and programming expenses for the foreseeable future. And although it was not in the Club's operating budget to open another site this year, serving students in rural parts of Cleveland County has been a part of the organization's long-term strategic plan for years, so the Club decided to act. "The timing seemed right, and the pieces began falling into place. I'm a believer that if you do the right things for the right reasons, support will follow," says Propst. Immediate financial support for the program has come from a Cleveland County initiative to provide needs-based scholarships for student membership fees in partnership with various community agencies, according to Propst. For the longer term, the BGCCC Club plans to reach out to existing donors and historical stakeholders to help support program growth. Leaders at the organization also hope to increase fundraising revenues and seek out new grants to support program expansion into other underserved parts of Cleveland County. "We truly appreciate Cleveland County's role in helping us make this happen," says Dr. Jack Weller, BGCCC president. "For long-term suc - cess, we'll need continued buy-in and ongoing assistance from the Casar community and the greater community."
