Bohemian Kolaches MEALS IN Monica's MINUTES By Monica Sinclair Last week, my husband and I went to visit our daugh- ter-in-law. While there, we tried kolaches for the first time and they were amazing! If you have never heard of them, they are a type of pastry that holds a portion of fruit, or any other filling you can think of, surrounded by puffy dough. I decided I would see if I could find an easy recipe for them so I could make them at home. Luckily, I was successful. If you have never tried these before, I really encourage you to do so. Enjoy! INGREDIENTS • 2 packages (1/4 ounce each) active dry yeast • 1/2 cup sugar, divided • 2 cups warm 2 % milk (110° to 115°) • 5 -3/4 to 6 -1/2 cups all- purpose flour • 4 large egg yolks, room temperature • 1 teaspoon salt • 1/4 cup butter, softened • 2 cups canned pie filling • 1 large egg white, beaten DIRECTIONS 1. In a small bowl, dissolve yeast and 1 tablespoon sug- ar in warm milk; let stand 10 minutes. In large bowl, combine 2 cups flour, remaining sugar, egg yolks, salt, butter and yeast/milk mixture. Mix until smooth. Add enough remaining flour to make a stiff dough. 2. Turn out onto a floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, 6 -8 minutes. Add additional flour, if necessary. Place dough in greased bowl, turning once to grease top. Cover; let rise in a warm place un- til doubled in bulk, about 1 hour. 3. Punch dough down and allow to rise again. Roll out on floured surface to 1/2-in. thickness. Cut with large glass or 2-1/2-in. cutter. Place on greased bak- ing sheets; let rise until doubled, about 45 minutes. 4. Firmly press indentation in center and fill each roll with a heaping tablespoon of filling. Brush dough with egg white. Bake at 350° for 10 -15 minutes or until rolls are light golden brown. Source: tasteof home.com Monitoring your child's devices is critical By Youth First, Inc. Staff Technology can be a great thing. It helps us communi- cate with loved ones who live far away. It helps parents have peace of mind when their child is going somewhere without them. It is a great resource to help educate our children. There are many advantag- es to having technology, but there are also many concerns when it comes to safety. Right now, during the pan- demic, many children and teens have more time and more access to technology than ever. They have unlim- ited access to apps, web pag- es, and social media. The old- er the child is, the less like- ly it is they have restrictions on what they can do on their phones and computers. But it is important for parents to monitor their child's usage, no matter the age of the child. According to parentology. com there are 10 reasons par- ents should be monitoring their child's phone or com- puters: • Online harassment • Distracted driving • Addictions • How they spend money • Online predators • Oversharing • Sexting • Inappropriate content • Dangerous apps • Your child's safety There are an increased number of children saying they are being bullied online. While it is important to make sure that your child is not the victim, it is equally important to make sure your child is not the one bullying or harass- ing others. Teens, especially, seem to have no fear of what they say online and can lack an understanding of the con- sequences their words can have. Driving while using elec- tronics is not a good idea for anyone. It's especially import- ant to counsel your teen on the dangers associated with dis- tracted driving. There are apps that can monitor a teen driver's speed to give parents a little peace of mind. Addictions can come in many forms–drugs, alcohol, cell phone or game usage to name a few. It is important to set healthy limits when it comes to the amount of time children spend playing vid- eo games. Monitor how much money they are spending on- line and make sure they are not spending money on games without permission. With apps such as Snap- chat, Tik Tok, Whisper, A fter School, Discord, Ask.fm or other social media apps, it is easy for teens and children to come into contact with strang- ers. This could lead them into a dangerous situation if they befriend a child predator. It is important for our child's safe- ty for them to know that they should never friend someone they do not know personally. They should never give out personal information or send inappropriate content of them- selves or others. There are helpful ways to monitor your child's phone: Have a conversation with your child and explain what your expectations are regard- ing the phone–what is okay and what is not. Explain the dangers of talking to strangers. Check devices daily to en- sure kids are acting safely. Download parental control apps on your phone to help monitor usage and notify you when your child is on unsafe websites. As parents it is our job to en- sure that our children are be- ing safe when they are using their phones or computers. While it is important to grant your child more freedom as they age, it is still important to track or check your child's phone and electronics uses to ensure they are being safe in their online interactions with others. Remember, until chil- dren are 18, parents are re- sponsible for anything they do on their phones or computers.
