Fendrich Golf Course qualifier for the Evansville Courier & Press Men's City Tournament. The eighth grader from Fort Branch Community School was among four others that were under par in Saturday's outing on the hilly 5,600 -yard par 70 westside course. A seven over par 77 was the cutoff for the well-attend- ed city championship qual- ifier. Blackard commented, "I played really solid on the front nine, hit all the fairways and only missed the ninth green, so I gave myself plen- ty of good chances for birdie and shot four under on that nine. I just about hit a hole-in- one on the par three, number eight hole playing 173 yards. It hit in front of the pin, danced a little and ended up six inches behind the hole. On the back nine, I didn't drive the ball consistent enough and had to do a little bit more scrambling. My chipping and par putting saved me on that nine. "I wasn't happy with the way I played the back nine because I missed some chances to score, but overall it was a good day." Asked about the course lay- out, Peyton said, "The hole locations were tough and set around the edges of greens and just over bunkers, so I had to be precise and hit to the cor- rect side of the hole." One highlight of the day for Peyton was holes six, seven and eight, which he birdied. Play like that in the first and second weekend in the Evans- ville tournament would make for a memorable and winning time with the sticks for the 14-year-old, who has two aces to his credit this year already. High school bound in a year and he already appears to be in line for many accolades in IHSA A competition and well beyond. Coming up right now for Peyton is the City Tourney, which kicks off Aug. 1 at Hel- frich Hills Golf Course and then Fendrich on Aug. 2. Roll- ing Hills Country Club hosts the Aug. 8 third round and Evansville Country Club is the fourth round on Aug. 9. Peyton Blackard was among four others that were under par in Sat- urday's outing on the hilly 5,600-yard par 70 westside course.
