Ronnie Humphries brought in 10.0 and captured the win, Larry Melton was second with 8.95 and in third was Ken Johnson and Fred Wright with 7.30. John Black and Roger McNeely had a 2.90 largemouth and that was big bass of the day. This week its back to Lake Norman and hopes for revenge against the lake. MOSS Twenty seven boats made it out to last Thursday's weekly bass tournament on Moss Lake, and if memory serves me correctly it was the first week, weather really wasn't a factor. Buddy and Michael Black took first place with 13.43 and edged out Bryan Thrift and Matt Arey who had 13.08. Jody Black and Travis Hamrick had 11.47 and were third. Jimmy Weaver and Randy Moss got fourth with 11.05 followed by JR Garland and Ronnie Beason with 10.59. Big bass of the evening was a 4.86 largemouth brought in by the winning team of Buddy and Michael Black. BASS CASTER FEDERATION The Bass Caster Federation Club fished Lake Hickory Saturday. Derek Angel had 15.12 and won while Chris Hoopaugh had 13.0 and was second. Chuck Camp took third with 12.80. Michael Smith had 11.88 and was fourth with Mark Swink getting fifth with 11.30. Gene Sparks had big bass of the day with a 4.22 largemouth. The Federation has some openings for anyone interested in joining a BASS Federated Cub. If interested call Chris @ 704-473-3922. BASS CASTERS Mark Swink got the win Sunday in the Bass Casters April event on Lake Hickory with 14.1. Randy Scarborough had 12.8 and was second followed by Chris Hoopaugh with 11.15. Tom Gavin had 4..5 and was fourth with Terry Knight getting fifth with 3.11. Swink also had big bass of the day with a 4.0 largemouth. The next event will be the Top Ten fish off this weekend, with members meeting at 4am at the old Wal-Mart building and drawing for a lake. The May event will be on Lake Rhodhiss May 12 from 6-3 If anyone has any suggestions on stories or pictures of their catch or kill, you can e-mail me at brucencracefancamp@ gmail.com. Jimmy Hal 704-482-8756 AFTER THE SPAWN After bass leave their beds their mood can range from savagely aggressive to totally lockjawed. There is no set pattern and all sorts of lures can work now. Start looking for post-spawn bass by locating vacated beds. Some bass hang around the edges after spawning. A 6-inch finesse worm works good by shaking and quivering it through the old nest. Also try a shallow ditch or creek channel leading from the nesting grounds to deeper water. The fish hold around stumps, bushes, laydown trees, and weeds. Some will only be in a foot of water, others will be deep. If the fish are shallow and it's early, try a buzzbait. When the sun gets up, go to a floating-diving minnow-style lure. Cast it tight to cover and keep twitching until the bass takes it. Don't get hung up on one lure or pattern. Keep your options open and experiment. Those words have been cemented in my head GARY MILLER from childhood. They were my dad's way of saying "get over it" and his way of letting me know that what I want may not always be what I get. I see this happen a lot in fishing. Instead of a largemouth, it's a gar. Instead of a smallmouth, it's a drum. Our high hopes of success are dashed against the rocks of an unpleasant surprise. At times, this swap can be dangerous. More than once I have called for a gobbler and a coyote has decided to spoil the party. A friend of mine shot a coyote at point-blank range when it tried to ambush him, thinking he was a real hen. And then there's the bobcat and even the wildcat. Both are ornery and don't like surprises on their end either. Just the other day, while turkey hunting, I saw the signs of one of those big cats and wondered if I was being watched. It was disconcerting and downright eerie. My area is home to the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park. There are over 20,000 acres of mostly mountains. Those mountains are home to all sorts of critters. Bears sightings are fairly common now, along with those cats. And even though the deer and turkey are flourishing, so are these other animals. While snakes used to be my only fear, now I have "lions and tigers and bears"…. Oh my! Well, maybe not lions and tigers. But bears and wildcats and rattlesnakes are enough to make me walk through the woods in the dark, lit up like a Christmas tree, while singing Victory in Jesus to the top of my lungs. I can imagine me easing through the woods, half scared to death, and then all of a sudden a hoot owl cries out just above my head……….. I'd jump through my skin, fly up a tree, and gobble like a sick jake! That is living the life of the unexpected. That is getting what you didn't ask for. That is life in the great outdoors. That's not, however, how it has to be concerning eternity. We don't have to wonder. We don't have to live in fear. And we don't have to live simply hoping that we will get what we ask for. The Bible is clear that, he who has the Son, has life. It's a sure thing. gary@outdoortruths.org ~ www.outdoortruths.org WANT TO BUY CAMPERS/RVs TOP DOLLAR PAID FOR A P ANTIQUES Glass milk bottles, (single or entire collection), with painted labels or embossed lettering.
