FIRST CHOICE The Cleveland County Family YMCA announced today that Sharon Decker, North Carolina Secretary of Commerce, will give the keynote address at the 18th annual YMCA Community Prayer Breakfast. This year's event will be held Thursday, May 9th at the LeGrand Center on the campus of Cleveland Community College. Tickets are $13 per person or $100 for a table of 8. You can purchase tickets at any YMCA branch. "The Prayer Breakfast is one of the signature events for our county and provides a wonderful opportunity for everyone to come together in prayer. We are so blessed to have a speaker the caliber of Mrs. Decker and to host this year's breakfast in the beautiful LeGrand Center," added YMCA Board Chair, Bill Plowden. Along with Decker, entertainment will be provided by Gina McWhirter and Daron Dwyer. McWhirter is a past YMCA employee who now works for the Catawba Valley YMCA. Dwyer is the Sports and Wellness Director at the Ruby Hunt YMCA. Sharon Decker YMCA CEO, Cameron Corder noted, "We are focused too much on what divides our community – creeks, schools, politics, race, etcetera. I encourage everyone to be a part of this breakfast to celebrate what brings us together – our faith." Sharon Allred Decker was appointed Secretary of Commerce by Governor Pat McCrory in January 2013. Decker is a summa cum laude graduate from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and spent more than 17 years with Duke Power Company, now Duke Energy. Decker left Duke Power as Chief Communications Officer to become the founding president of The Lynnwood Foundation, which was created to restore the Duke Mansion in Charlotte as a conference center, and to begin the William States Lee Leadership Institute. While at Lynnwood in 1998, she also served as the chair of the Charlotte Chamber and was named Charlotte Woman of the Year. She moved to Rutherfordton in 1999 to serve as president of the Doncaster division of Tanner Companies. In 2004, she created and served as the CEO of the Tapestry Group, a non-profit that helps individuals lead healthy lives in body, mind and spirit. In addition to her work with Tapestry, Decker is wife to her husband, Bob, a mother of four, a lay pastor in the Presbyterian Church (USA) and a student at the Christopher White School of Divinity, completing her Master of Divinity Degree with a concentration in Spiritual Formation. She completed an internship last year as Director of Graduate Ministries for the Center for Christian Study in Charlottesville, Va., where she served as chaplain to students at the Darden School of Business and the UVA School of Law. She remains a member of the Board of the Center for Christian Study. For more information about the breakfast and other YMCA programs you can visit the web site at www.clevecoymca.org.
