Many churches are can- celling services. Some are planning to have services if they aren't required to close. Those staying open are tell- ing people if they are sick in a high risk group, please stay home. Dr. Suzanne Blake, Su- perintendent of Pike Coun- ty Schools said while they plan to come back to school on April 6, it is just a wait- and-see situation. "I have people calling me about all of these events such as prom, kindergar- ten and pre-school round- up, IRead and other testing as well as college exams like the SAT and ACT. "We just don't know. We are trying to work through the immedi- ate situation. It is all chang- ing so quickly, what we have planned may change by to- morrow." She said it is pos- sible they won't return on April 6. She said luckily, they had a mild winter with only one or two snow days. Also Gov- ernor Holcomb announced he was giving schools a 20 -day waiver, which basi- cally means they can miss 20 days without having make them up. Blake said she met last week on Tuesday with teach- ers to warn them to start pre- paring in case the schools were to close. She said they have done extended days of eLearning now two weeks straight. She then met with teachers again on Monday and they planned to do les- sons that are a combination of traditional paper and pen- cil exercises as well as eL - earning. Also she wanted teachers to think hard about how to do challenging and engaging eLearning to keep the interest. She said some of the meetings were for teachers to put their heads together and come up with collective ideas. The athletics is even more up in the air. "It is a bad deal," said Pike Central Ath- letic Director Dustin Pow- ell. "Seniors aren't getting to play their season. It is un- fortunate for those kids, but at the same time we have to take care of the kids." He said the short time- frame of the spring season and unpredictable weather make matters worse. Pike Central plans to come back on April 6, but many other schools in the area aren't returning until April 13. All practices and meetings have been prohibited by the IH- SA A. While the girls softball and track teams have al- ready been practicing, the boys golf, girls tennis and boys baseball were sup- posed to start on Monday. When they return to school, the teams that haven't been practicing will have com- plete 10 practices on dif- ferent days to be eligible to compete. The teams that al- ready have completed five or more practices must have a minimum of six more prac- tices. That will delay any com- petitions by at least one to two weeks. Powell said they will have to work out if they are go- ing to play all the confer- ence teams or just try to get in what games they have on the schedule. Powell said Spring is dif- ficult to make up very many games because of weather- related issues during April and May. Continued from page 1 COVID-19 Louis Fink Petersburg man nets drug charges at Hampton Inn Louis Fink, 26, of Peters- burg, was charged with ob- struction of jus- tice, possession of parapherna- lia with a prior conviction and possession of a schedule I con- trolled substance in connection with a March 13 arrest at Princ- eton's Hampton Inn. At 1:22 p.m., deputies with the Gibson County Sheriff's Office assisted officers with the Princeton Police Depart- ment in a drug investigation on a room where suspected drug activity was occurring. According to the Gibson County Sheriff's Office re- port, during that investiga- tion, Fink attempted to de- stroy illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia. Deputy U.B. Smith re- trieved the items before they were de- stroyed and placed Fink into custody. At the conclu- sion of his in- vestigation, Deputy Smith transported Fink to the Gibson County Jail, where he was charged and has since posted a $750 bond. Deputy Jennifer Loesch, with the Gibson Coun- ty Sheriff's Office, as well as Officer's J.D. Clark and Nefty Padilla, with the Princeton Police Depart- ment, were involved in this investigation. STEM camp scholarships for girls Pace Community Action Agency, Inc, is once again empowering women for the workforce by providing a limited number of schol- arships for girls to attend STEM (Science Technology Engineering, Math) Camps. According to the National Science Board, women con- stitute only 28 percent of workers in STEM occupa- tions. The low percentage of women is unfortunate be- cause STEM related careers are one of the fastest-grow- ing fields in the job indus- try with above average pay. According to STEM Occu- pations: Past, Present, and Future by the US Bureaus of Labor Statistics, the av- erage wage for STEM oc- cupations is $ 87,570, near- ly double the national aver- age wage for non-STEM oc- cupations. There are a variety of camps in our area that pro- vide hands-on technology activities for youth. Pace is seeking to lower the wage disparity between males and females by promoting the STEM field to young wom- en. Our promotion is car- ried out through our schol- arships to STEM camps. Scholarships are Pace's way of making sure that finan- cial issues do not stop low- income females from attend- ing STEM camps. Interested individuals should identify a camp of in- terest and complete the ap- plication on our website at www.pacecaa.org. Finan- cial reimbursement may in- clude the cost of the camp and mileage to and from the camp. Apply as soon as pos- sible, only a limited number of scholarships exist. A fter all applications are received individuals will be noti- fied if they are accepted as a scholarship recipient. Dr. Bertha Proctor, Pace CEO, comments on this program, "Pace is committed to ad- dressing causes and condi- tions of poverty. These schol- arships We're not afraid to shed some light on the truth. 812-354-8500 SUBSCRIBE TODAY!
