We received no postcards or notes this week at Sweets Column, Winslow, IN 47598. Winslow Patoka River should be about the same as last week because we had rain Sunday, Monday and Tues- day from the storms, but Winslow re- ceived maybe 1/2 an inch. The storms from the tornado watch were more in Kentucky and Tennessee. The rain that was supposed to come split to the north and south of Winslow. We did get a few lightning strikes. The temps all week up to Friday were in the low 60s and 40s at night. The wind had picked up and the ground was wet from all the moisture from the runoff from the hillsides where we live. So, the winds helped to dry it up a little. The coyotes have been heard in our area and they sound really close. Saturday, Feb. 29 was Leap Day and we enjoyed the company of my Mom and sister, and the lovely day of sun- shine. Sunday, March 1 was also sun- ny and calm, and "March came in like a lamb," which means it will leave like a lion. I do hope you all had set your clocks ahead one hour so you didn't ar- rive at your place Sunday an hour early. Laura had more trouble with her car again from a business who doesn't know how to put lug nuts back on a tire, because she lost two and two more were really loose. Besides that, she had no vacuum line replaced and someone used scotch tape on a part. I guess she should have had a Pike County busi- ness do the work and it would have been done right the first time. Last Thursday night, March 5, I heard that Arthur Junction had sprin- kles and nothing in Winslow. Over- night, the wind picked up into the 30 mph range and was to continue all day Friday, with winds 15 -20 mph and the temp was 45 -50 degrees. March is the windy month, so it's living up to its rep- utation this year so far. We are saddened to see the pass- ing of Cheryl Carlisle, 66, on Febru- ary 26, 2020. To Max, her husband of 16 years, and all of the Carlisle fami- ly and Lawrence family, remember all the great times and share your memo- ries, and more memories will be add- ed. I know Cheryl loved to travel to the Young Farmers Conventions by the many postcards we received through the years from her and Max. Cheryl will be missed greatly by loved ones and new friends. The lights are about to dim for this week and I hope to see you all on March 14 at Pi Day in Winslow with the Winslow Lions, as you enjoy a piece of pie or a whole pie at this special event. Keep an eye on family and friends. Slow down and enjoy your area of this big world. As always, smile, wave and say "Hi" to everyone you see this week. My daughter asked, "Wanna know what I'm gonna name my children? " Of course I did. "I'm go- ing to have two daughters, named Rose and Lily, and a son named Black-Eyed Su- san." "Is this a flower-child take on 'A Boy Named Sue'? " My daughter blinked. She's 4. She doesn't yet know Johnny Cash, and more shamefully, she has yet to memorize the com- plete works of Shel Silver- stein. I redirected my question. "Why the name Black-Eyed Susan for your boy? " I asked. "Because it's a flower," she respond- ed. "Right. But why that flower? " I asked. "Mmm," she said, thinking, "because he's going to be a pirate." Of course. I told her I love the names. Far be it from me to talk trash about the names of my fu- ture grandchildren. I hat- ed it when my children's grandparents took a woe- fully long time to em- brace my kids' names — names that suit them perfectly. And seeing as my little grandson Black-Eyed Susan will grow up to be a pirate, his name clear- ly will suit him well, too. Mama knows best. Names have been on our minds a lot lately. Both of my children have un- common names that are still names. We steered clear of anything too out- landish, such as Hot Tub and Sas- quatch, but also stayed away from Dick and Jane. My kids have not yet met oth- er kids with their names, so my hus- band and I find ourselves frequently asking the kids whether they like their own names. They assure us they do. But they do have questions. Since moving to the wild, my daughter has encountered endless other little girls with hyphenated names that come out to about eight syllables.
