The Chargers locked up a winning record this sea- son by going 4-1 at the For- est Park Invite on Saturday, Jan. 11. The team sits with an 18 -13 overall record, with only two regular season du- el meets remaining. "We had a really good weekend at Forest Park," Pike Central coach Ry- an McCain said. "It was a big improvement from last year's fourth-place finish. It really showed the heart and determination of this team, because we had a winning season on the line and we also lost two starters this week due to injury. All the guys really had to step up and take advantage of the opportunities that were giv- en and they did just that." Pike Central defeated Princeton 50 -30, North Knox 39 -33, South Spen- cer 48 -30 and Forest Park 52-15. The team's lone loss came against Evansville North. Isaiah Greer (113-pound weight class) and Dalton Williams (120) each won their respective weight classes. "Isaiah really stepped up his game," McCain said. "He came to wrestle like he is capable of, and defeat- ed his opponent from Forest Park that beat him last year, and set himself up nice for sectional and PAC. If Greer can keep wrestling like he did today, I think he will do well at PAC and sectional. He's got the conditioning, he's got the talent and the skills, but it's gonna fall on him to put all that together and perform." Williams' season started off rough, but it seems like he's starting to figure some things out. He's went 15 -3 since Dec. 20. "He was really starting to doubt himself, but we were able to get his head on straight and get his confi- dence built back up," Mc- Cain said. "It's been a com- plete turn around, and I hope he can keep that go- ing." Pike Central will host Evansville Central on Thursday, Jan. 16, and Evansville Memorial on Tuesday, Jan. 21, before competing in the PAC Meet on Saturday, Jan. 25 at Heri- tage Hills High School. "Hopefully, we can win the next two duels, which I believe we can," McCain said. "That will put us up in the 20 win column. It'll be a great accomplishment for this year's team. They faced a lot of adversity this year and I can't say enough good things about these guys be- ing able to put a season to- gether like this. It's really a testament to how tough and determined this team is and I'm proud of all of them." Pike Central Middle School basketball roundup By Dennis Marshall Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net The Pike Central eighth- grade boys' basketball team continued to build an excel- lent season with three more victories this past week to improve its overall record to 11-4. They defeated Washing- ton, 43-34, on Monday, Jan. 13. "We played really well overall," coach JJ Howald said. "It was the best we have rebounded all year, which was a big part of the game, as Washington had a ton of size. We hit our free throws down the stretch to finish a great team win." Quade Morton led the team with 19 points. Oth- er Chargers' scorers were Chase Ridao (11), Ethan Meadors (6), Zane Gehlhau- sen (4) and Julian Gish (3). The team also won 48 - 25 against North Knox on Thursday, Jan. 9. "It was a game of two halves," Howald said. "We went into the locker room only up one. Give credit to North Knox as they played a whole lot harder than us. We started doing the little things we preach right on the defensive end and were able to pull away after only giving up six points in the second half." Gish scored 18. He was followed by Meadors (9), Morton (8), Ridao (7), Ge- hlhausen (4) and Braxton Deweese (3). The eighth graders also beat George Rogers Clark, 39 -31, on Wednesday, Jan. 8. "It was a hard-fought win," Howald said. "Vincennes had a lot of length and we did a really good job of han- dling their pressure in the second half and came away with the win." Gish and Morton led the team with 19 and 16, respec- tively. Gehlhausen and Rid- ao each added two. The seventh-grade boys defeated North Knox, 47- 36, and were led in scoring by Brenton Fryrear with 13. Other scorers were No- ah Meece (12), Jake Pauw (6), Eli Arnold (4), Albert Whitehead (3), Arie O'Ne- al (3), Barrett Cooper (2), Drew Dawson (2) and Ja- kob Newkirk (2). "It's nice to see nine play- ers get into the scoring col- umn in a great team win," coach Jake Robinette said. "We have won three out of the last four games and these guys are playing good ball." The team fell 49 -34 to George Rogers Clark. "It was a tight game go- ing into the fourth quarter," Robinette said. "We got in- to foul trouble. These kids fought hard against a tough team." The Chargers' scor- ers were Fryrear with 15, Meece with eight, Barrett Cooper with four, Dawson with three, and Jake Pauw and Eli Arnold each scored two. The Pike Central eighth- grade girls' team lost 34-18 to Boonville on Wednesday, Jan. 8. Brailey Mills scored 10. Kelby Leighty had four and Shelby Meadows had two. There scores were sub- mitted from the Pike Central seventh-grade girls' basket- ball team.
