"We started out strong and were tied after the first quarter," Elliott said. "We were still within fighting distance at halftime and then they got away from us in the third quarter." Braylin Graf was very im- pressive for the Cardinals and scored a game-high 22 points. "He's is a very solid player, especially for a sophomore," Elliott said. "We had way too many turnovers and just had some careless lazy mistakes with the basketball, and you can't do that, especially against a great team." Ethan Scott led Pike Cen- tral with 10 points. Other scorers were Colin Craig (5), Jaden Guth (4), Ethan Gorby (2), Hunter DeHaven (1) and Sean Hanselman (1). The loss sent the Char- gers to a consolation match- up with Eastern Greene (4- 7, 0 -2 SWIAC) on Thursday, Jan. 9, which Pike Central won, 56 -40, for its first win of the season. "We came out hungry and ready to go," Elliott said. "I am always preaching the importance of starting and finishing quarters with mo- mentum. That is when you have to make winning plays and really be locked in, and we did just that when we needed to." The Chargers started the game on a 9 -0 run and fin- ished the first quarter with a 17-6 led. Pike Central built its lead all the way up to 17 in the first half before Eastern Greene narrowed it to four points in the third quarter, but the Chargers went on a 7-0 run after that and never looked back. DeHaven was outstand- ing in just his second var- sity game. He finished with 19 points, four rebounds, an assist and a block, and real- ly set the tone for the team early on. "I really could not be more proud of a kid than Hunter," shoot the basketball when we take care of it and play selfless basketball. We brought energy and inten- sity from the start and had to overcome some adversity when they made their run to win the game and I was very proud of our boys. They de- served that one and, hope- fully, it will give us confi- dence moving forward." Pike Central struggled in its final game on Satur- day, Jan. 11, and lost 48 -23 to White River Valley (5 -6, 1-2 SWIAC) in a tale of two halves. The Chargers trailed by just three points at halftime after the Wolverines hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer. "I really thought we out- played them in the first half. We just could not get any shots to fall," Elliott said. "I was not happy with our chemistry in the first half and thought we were not communicating well on the floor and had a bunch of kids going in several different di- rections, instead of being to- gether. We addressed it at halftime, but we did not do a better job of it in the second half and they made a run." Pike Central made some silly mental mistakes in the third quarter and struggled shooting the ball. "We were taking decent shots, but they were quick. We were settling instead of attacking," Elliott said. "When you are not hitting, that hurts. I was very dis- appointed in our response when things didn't go our way. We want to do every- thing in an uncommon way and we did not handle ad- versity well in this game. We wanted to pout and act tough, instead of coming to- gether and battling our way to a win. I thought we were the better team and we let this one slip. We have to learn from it and continue to get better, and when this situation comes up again, we will be more prepared to handle it." DeHaven led the team with six points, two re- bounds, an assist and a steal; Scott had five points and four rebounds; Gorby had two points, three rebounds and an assist; Hanselman had four points, a rebound and an assist; Guth had two points and a rebound; Craig had four points, two rebounds and an assist; and Jersey Mills had two re- bounds. "Overall, we really en- joyed the atmosphere, gym and tournament," Elliott said of the tournament. "White River Valley was a great host and really treat- ed us well. Going in, we re- ally were thinking we should be able to get two wins out of this tournament, and al- though that was not the case, we did get that first win, and I think we really showed what we are capable of doing. Now it is just being able to do that on a consis- tent basis, no matter the op- ponent." Pike Central will host Class 3A No. 3 Heritage Hills (8 -3, 2-0 PAC) on Fri- day, Jan. 17, and Wood Me- morial (1-9, 0 -1 Blue Chip) on Saturday, Jan. 18. Elliott said. "He has worked very hard to get to this point and now is reaping the ben- efits. He really changes us when he is out on the floor and we are grateful to have him." Scott scored a game-high 22 points. He also had five re- bounds, two assists and two steals. "He is one that once he gets rolling, you have to let him go," Elliott said. "And he was rolling tonight." Gorby finished with five points, five rebounds and five assists. He also made some huge plays on defense by taking three charges. Craig did a nice job against Eastern Greene's big man, and Guth continued his con- sistent play on both ends of the floor with three points and five rebounds. Hansel- man had five points, four re- bounds, two assists and two steals. "Everyone really played a heck of a game," Elliott said. "I just need to get [Guth] more shots, and I really was proud of the way Sean played. I got onto him early in the game, and he respond- ed well getting into the paint Ethan Scott pushes the pace during Pike Central's game with Bloomfield in the opening round of Greene County Tournament on Wednesday, Jan. 8. Sean Hanselman locks down a Bloomfield de- fender on Wednesday, Jan. 8. Jaylon Mills keeps control of the basketball after nearly tripping against Bloomfield on Wednesday, Jan. 8. and finding open shooters. "I believe we really showed what we are capa- ble of that game. We have some kids that can really
