Poplar Street, Petersburg SEVENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO The Petersburg Press Friday and Tuesday, Sept. 8 and Sept. 12, 1944 James W. Dupont, son of Mrs. Sadie Dupont, report- ed missing in action July 31 in France, has been found in a Paris Hospital and re- moved to England, where he is still confined to a hos- pital with injuries to his left leg. Dupont was a prison- er of war, according to the letter received but little else has been reported, no doubt due to the strict cen- sorship over released pris- oners. He was in the 23rd division and had been over- seas nine months at the time he was listed as miss- ing in action. He has anoth- er brother, who has served over two years of duty over- seas and is now in the Bill- ings General Hospital. Miss Lois Conrad, 7, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Conrad, sustained some painful cuts and bruises Friday when she stepped from the sidewalk into the side of a car driv- en by Mr. Elmo Morton. The child was on her way to school and was watching a truck going up the street and failed to see the car. Her injuries are aid to not be of a serious nature. Births: To Dr. and Mrs. Frank Bethel, Jr., a boy, Charles Frank, Friday eve- ning in the Daviess County Hospital; To Mr. and Mrs. Claude Cox, of Petersburg, a daughter, Mary Lynn, born September 7. Deaths: Cyrus L. Willis, 52, of Stendal, died at noon on Friday at the home of Herman Tevault, a neigh- bor. SIXTY YEARS AGO The Petersburg Press Thursday, December 10, 1959 Banking room of the First National Bank in Spurgeon has been remod- eled and redecorated into a moder and attractive room. New blonde oak service counter and tellers' win- dows have replaced the iron grill cages. The floor has been laid with beige and tan tile. The ceiling has been lowered and the walls have been painted a soft green. The woodwork has been varnished. Busi- ness for the bank contin- ued without interruption in the directors' room, with patrons using the back door while the remodeling was being done. Petersburg telephone users gave their new di- al system a heavy work- out Sunday and the first of the week, dialing both lo- cal and long distance calls. The dial switching equip- ment in the Midwest Tele- phone Company build- ing clicked with activity as thousands of calls were routed through it. Peters- burg firemen are especial- ly requesting that persons using the new dial system learn the number of the Petersburg fire depart- ment and dial that num- ber only when reporting a fire. The reason the fire- men are concerned about people learning the num- ber is that 16 telephones in firemen's homes ring automatically when the fire department number is called. This is their call to go to a fire. Sunday, the phones rang several times and there were no reported fires. The same thing hap- pened Monday and Tues- day, causing the firemen a great amount of concern. Since the dialing of the fire number is similar to pull- ing a fire alarm box in the city, any person who dials the number when there is not a fire could be charged with a misdemeanor and receive a stiff fine or pos- sible sentence. Births: To Mr. and Mrs. Louis Kell, of Oak- land City, a daughter, in the Gibson General Hospi- tal in Princeton; To Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Bowman, Jr., of Oakland City, Wednes- day, November 25 in Oak- land City Hospital, a son, Delbert Homer III; To Mr. and Mrs. James Ellis, of Pe- tersburg, a daughter, Kelly Annette, in Good Samari- tan Hospital December 7. Deaths: John E. How- ard, 65, of Petersburg, died Tuesday at 7 a.m. at the Da- viess County Hospital. FIFTY YEARS AGO The Press-Dispatch Thursday, December 25, 1969 Five young boys out for a joy ride Thursday night, December 18, ended up with a combined damage of $ 6,000 to a 1968 Chev- rolet Chevelle and a house. Ronald Fulcher, 16, driv- er of the car, lost control of the car on a curve on State Road 356 in Algiers. The car skidded 240 feet, then struck the Fred Wil- lis home on the north cor- ner of the porch, knock- ing a hole in the house on that side, skidded across the porch, knocking down the wrought iron posts, then hit the house again, knocking another hole in the house on the northeast side. It also knocked down a television tower. The car was traveling east at a high rate of speed, according to the investigating Indiana State Police officer. Pas- sengers in the car were Terry Satterfield, 15, of Vel- pen, Reno Richardson, 15, and Kevin Lottes, 15, both of Otwell, and Bryan Flint, 15. Satterfield was taken to the Memorial Hospital in Jasper, suffering from shock and possible minor injuries. Jim Lynn and Eddie Tis- dale escaped being seri- ously injured in a train- truck accident Sunday night at 8:15. The acci- dent occurred on Line Road, one and a half miles north of Maryville, when Mr. Tisdale's truck, head- ed south, ran into the side of a Southern westbound freight train. It was snow- ing and they reported to Deputy Sheriff Raymond Haggard that they did not see the train in time to stop. When Mr. Tisdale ap- plied the brakes, the truck skidded into the side of the train. The 1957 Ford F600 truck was a total wreck. The impact tore the front bumper half off, tore off the grill, radiator, left front door and windshield. The steering wheel was driven straight up to the top of the cab and pushed the firewall back even with the back of the dash. The foot brake and clutch pedals were shoved back even with the seat and the bed of the truck was knocked loose from the frame. The two men were thrown clear of the wreckage. They were lucky to come out of the ac- cident with only bruises, although Mr. Lynn com- plained of pain in his back and lower spine.
