Marissa Brosmer Nurse Practitioner Petersburg takes control of Walnut Hills Cemetery By Andy Heuring Petersburg took control of the Walnut Hills Cemetery and had a public hearing on their application for a nearly $500,000 grant to construct a new water line to their wa- ter plant. The City Council voted 5 - 0 to approve accepting con- trol of the cemetery from the Odd Fellows Lodge, which had owned and operated the cemetery. Mayor R.C. Klipsch said the Odd Fellow Lodge had contacted him earlier this year and asked if the city was interested in taking con- trol of it from the lodge. He said there are only about six active members and "their average age is north of 80." "Our whole intention isn't we want to own the ceme- tery. We just didn't want it to get into the wrong hands and it not be taken care of," said Klipsch. Earlier this year, at a previous meet- ing, the council discussed the cemetery and their fear was it would be purchased by a private company with no local connections, which might lead to maintenance problems. "We don't want to see it suffer," said Klipsch. According to the agree- ment, the city will take over control on January 1, 2020. He said they will be working out the details of its opera- tion between now and then. However, he said they will probably have people con- tact City Hall to purchase burial plots and to conduct other business transactions. The council conducted a public hearing about a grant application to help fund a wa- ter line to be built between the city's well field and their new water plant. The grant is an 80 -20 grant that would provide $480,000 for the project, with Petersburg's match being $120,000. The current water line is 70 years old, and runs through a wooded area and farm fields. Mayor Klipsch said the line has been ex- posed several times due to erosion in the sandy soil of that area. He added Terry Hoke, who owns the farm ground, has filled in sever- al areas of erosion that ex- posed the line. Fire Chief and City Ser- vices Manager Ross El- more said if the current water line failed, it would be catastrophic for the fire department. "There is no- where close for us to get a water supply." He said the closest water supply would be at the IPL plant. Elmore and Klipsch said not only does the water line supply water to Petersburg, it also supplies water to Win- slow, Otwell, Pike-Gibson and Pike Central. Ashley Willis, with the Pike County Economic De- velopment Corporation, said the water supply is critical to development. She and May- or Klipsch said the first question asked by develop- ment prospects is "do you have wate? " "We have a great water source. We just need to be able to distribute it," said Klipsch. Petersburg is also in the process of building a new water plant, as well as up- dating and expanding their wastewater treatment plant. Klipsch said the water line from the well field to the new plant is vital to the proj- ect. "It is critical to get the grant on this water line, be- cause we are going to have to build it regardless." Petersburg is supposed to find out if they get the grant either late this year or early next year. In other business, Elmore said, "We had to deal with a serious problem down at the Jay C Foodstore. Guys worked numerous hours there last week trying to get grease unclogged all the way to the lift station." "Do they not have a trap? " asked Councilman John Melhiser. Elmore said they had a trap, but it was a lack of maintenance. Mayor Klipsch said it was almost like concrete and it not only got into the line, but made its way all into the lift station and caused damage to the lift station pump. "We have guys with as much as 16 hours working on it, plus damage to the pump. It is going to be quite a bill," said Elmore. Mayor Klipsch said city ordinance clearly states the source of the grease prob- lem is responsible for the cost to fix the problem. He said apparently Jay C used to contract with a com- pany to maintain it for them, but that stopped a few years ago. Councilman Gary Leavitt asked if the deli wasn't in- spected by the county food inspector. Elmore said apparently because they are not a res- taurant, they have not been inspected. "The Health Dept. has been inspecting the food side of it." Klipsch and Elmore said they were going to look in- to if the Health Dept. or the City will start inspecting it. In other business, the city appointed Briar Meadors, son of former Sheriff Todd Meadors, as a Reserve Po- lice Officer. The next City Council meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday, Decem- ber 2.
