The Press-Dispatch Church Wednesday, November 20, 2019 C- 3 Continued from page 2 Pentecostal Nazarene Lutheran Methodist Methodist LIVING FAITH CHURCH INTERNATIONAL 601 S. 9th Street, Petersburg Phone: 812-809-4544 New location— 601 S. 9th Street, Petersburg (Former- ly the Wesleyan Church). Sunday study 9 -9:35 a.m.; Sunday services at 10 a.m.; Wednesday service from 6:30 -8 p.m.; youth service Sunday from 6 -7:30 p.m. We have the power of life and death in the words we speak (Proverbs 18:21). By our words, we form the world we live in. We are children of God and He has passed onto us the ability to speak things into existence (Romans 4:17). Now the enemy's job is to silence us or trick us. When we take offense to a situation, we can rise up and start speaking negative things (death) or we can speak what the Word of God says such as "I am in perfect peace when I keep my focus on you, Lord. You are my de- fender Lord, and I will hide in You when the enemy at- tacks. You Lord, work all things for my good because I trust You and am called ac- cording to Your purpose." You choose to speak what God says about you and the situation. As a Christian, you have the ability to love (through God) those who persecute you. That's how we defeat the attacks of the enemy. C.R. 475 S. Winslow Pastor 812-239-6843 Sunday morning church service at 10 a.m. and Sun- day school 11 a.m. As is our usual custom, this is the time of year that we focus on our blessings and being thankful to the LORD who provided them. What we do with the bless- ings that God has given is of- ten a window of insight that reveals the true spirit and at- titude of our hearts. I remember talking to a friend many years ago who said he saw a man in church dumping handfuls of pock- et change into the offering plate. Then after the ush- er had already moved on to the next pew the man start- ed waving his arms excit- edly trying to get the ush- er's attention because he found one more penny to put in the plate. You might think that was an awful lot of fuss to make over one penny but it really comes into per- spective when you find out the man is actually home- less. That very well could have been his last penny and to think he was so excited about giving it away. What about you? If God were to search every recess of your heart would he find such a generous spirit and grateful attitude? Perhaps it's time that we take a se- rious look within ourselves and see all the blessings that surround us. Maybe then we will spend less time and en- ergy concerned about what we don't have and become more thankful and gener- ous with what we do have. Jason Hill, Pastor PETERSBURG HOLINESS CHURCH Pastor 419-340-5500 (C) Parsonage 812- 354-9446 Sunday school 9:30 a.m.; morning worship and spe- cial junior church service at 10 :30 a.m.; Jr. Church theme: "Thanksgiving;" eve- ning worship 6:30 p.m.; week- ly Wednesday night prayer meeting at 7 p.m. Transpor- tation available. Following sudden, untest- ed impressions has led to much confusion. All impres- sions are not from above. Here are some ways to de- tect the Spirit's leadership. The leadings of the Holy Spirit are scriptural. The Ho- ly Spirit and the Bible speak the same language. The Ho- ly Spirit will not tell you to do something that He has al- ready forbidden in His Word. The Holy Spirit's leadings are also providential. When God leads, providence will open the way. He never leads up to a closed door for us to beat our heads against. The Spir- it's leadings are also reason- able. Common sense and re- ligion go hand in hand, and when you divorce them, you are as a rule led into confu- sion. The way to heaven is narrow. It is bounded on one side by liberalism and the oth- er side by legalism. To go too far to either side is to miss the way completely. It is vi- tally important to be able to discern the still, small voice and to follow His leadership explicitly. Sermon Title: "No one Said it was Easy." The people of Jesus' time were inspired by the beauty of the Temple. It was so magnif- icent they would not believe that any power in heaven or on earth could damage or de- stroy its glory. Jesus pointed out in very hard words that de- pendence on what we see and what we believe will stand for- ever are not eternal or endur- ing in God's time or power. For those who put their faith in the things of this earth would find their faith destroyed and those things they believed eternal sudden- ly gone in a moment of history. Yet Jesus promises to those who would place their faith in him that they would find peace and salvation for their souls, maybe not in this world, but in the world God has cre- ated for them. Balancing what we see in the world with what is eternal is not easy. For to gain the eternal we may have to give up much the world says we should value. Can we do that? Let's talk about it this com- ing Sunday. Michael (Mike) Punke, Pastor PETERSBURG FREE METHODIST CHURCH 202 E. "Far too often, I allow moments that show God at work and His kind ways to simply pass by, fail- ing to recognize that ev- ery perfect gift comes from my heavenly Father ( James 1:17), who made me and loves me. May you and I learn to connect ev- ery blessing in our lives to God's enduring love for us"—Peter Chin. How can we better re- member the source of life's blessings? What hinders you from doing so? "Heavenly Father, don't allow even one blessing that you've given pass by without me recognizing that it came from You, and You alone"—Amen. Tues- day morning women's Bible study at the fellowship hall 10 a.m. The Scrawny Turkey It's the day before Thanks- giving, and the butcher is just locking up when a man begins pounding on the front door. "Please let me in," says the man desperately. "I forgot to buy a turkey, and my wife will be mad at me if I don't come home with one." "Okay," says the butcher. "Let me see what I have left." He goes into the freezer and discovers that there's only one scrawny turkey left. He brings it out to show the man. "That one is too skinny. What else you got? " says the man. The butcher takes the bird back into the freezer and waits a few minutes and brings the same turkey back out to the man. "Oh, no," says the man, "That one doesn't look any better. You better give me both of them." This little story is an ex- ample of how we can be mis- led. The butcher didn't think he would get caught in his deception. It was just a little white lie. Really? Is there such a thing? Some lies hold big- ger consequences than oth- ers, but a lie is a lie. We invite all of you to come and worship with us. Roy Stilwell, Pastor Pam Lemond, Reporter Sunday morning worship 9 a.m.; Sunday school 10 :15 a.m. We are exploring the words in Philippians 4:4-9 and how they can help us thrive in chaos. So many trials come in- to our lives and along with the business of life. These things can easily choke out the Life of God in us. But praise God, "But seek ye first the Kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things will be added unto you" (Matthew 6:33). What things will be add- ed? God's order back into our lives—a peace that pass- es all understanding—He is in control. Facebook: White River Chapel UMC, Jeff Pinney.
