Lady Oaks ride hot start, balanced scoring to first win By Dennis Marshall Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net The Oakland City women's basket- ball team notched its first milestone of the young season by noting its first win, 102-57, against Lincoln Christian University (0 -3) on Friday, Nov. 15 at the Johnson Center. "A win at any time is great, but be- ing able to do it at home was even bet- ter," Oakland City head coach Shayne Ross said. "We drew energy from the crowd and hope that the brand of bas- ketball we play will encourage people to come out and pack the Johnson Cen- ter the way it was in its heyday." Sophomore guard McKendree Ward scored a team-high 16 points and was one of seven players in double dig- its to lead the Lady Oaks. Oakland City (1-2) started strong by shooting well over 50 percent from the field in the first half and led 56 -29 at the break. "I think it is important to get out fast against any team," Ross said. "I think if you set the tone for the game early on, it lets the other team get a feel for what the night should be like. Some teams will fade if you do that. For us, it was huge for our confidence after a shaky start in our last game." The Lady Oaks cruised in the sec- ond half, outscoring the Red Lions by double figures in the third and fourth quarters. "I thought we shared the ball well and tried to push the pace," Ross said. "We have been talking about the im- portance of ball movement and I real- ly think we did a good job of focusing on that based on 26 assists on the num- ber of field goals we had. We also did a great job of cutting down turnovers, which had plagued us in our first few games." Ward also had seven rebounds, five assists and two steals. Xerena Tomp- kins, Kiare Young, Malia Schmit- tler and Laurin Bently each added 14 points for Oakland City. Schmittler al- so had 16 rebounds. The Lady Oaks' other contributors were Reanne Kietlinski with 11, Tab- by Klem with 10 and Hailey Marchino with nine. Kietlinski also had seven re- bounds and seven assists. "The effort we played with stood out," Ross said. "Even in our losses, the ladies have played hard and tonight was no different. We are really young and for a team to understand that we will have growing pains, but if our ef- fort is there, we have a chance is huge." The Lady Oaks outscored the Red Lions 54-22 in the paint. Oakland City had 34 points off turnovers to Lincoln Christian's nine. The Lady Oaks had 29 second chance points to just eight by the Red Lions, Oakland City's bench outscored Lincoln Christian 39 -5 and the Lady Oaks had 26 more fast break points. Oakland City travels to Indiana Uni- versity-Southeast (6 -1) on Tuesday, Nov. 19. Then the Lady Oaks are back at the Johnson Center against Asbury University (7-1) on Friday, Nov. 22, and against Welch College (0 -1) on Mon- day, Nov. 25.
