Elements has a storefront just north of the Dubois County Courthouse and is now offering holiday hours. Assisting customers and those needing framing work are, (l to r): Barb Wendel, Angela Hildenbrand, owner, Kathy Hilger and Jane Braun. By James Capozella Staff Writer staff@sgstartimes.com If you haven't had the chance to step into Elements on the square in Jasper, here is what you will find. The minute you walk in, you might smell roasted coffee, sweet vanilla, or possibly gingerbread. Better be careful, the candles are addicting. The next thing you might notice is lots of artisan-made goods. Kathy Hilger, the owner, has been making art in some form since early school days. She is very inter- ested in other artists, and loves tell- ing their stories and selling their goods. Shoppers will find hand- thrown pottery, jewelry, photog- raphy, wind chimes, stained glass, re-purposed and up-cycled pieces, journals, candles, all handmade from local, regional and national artists. Like surprises? Make a few laps around the store and see fun vin- tage finds. There have been ma- ny over the years, but they don't stay long before they find their way home with excited customers. From vintage signs, foundry molds, typewriters, old carts turned into bars to traffic lights. It's part of the fun in shopping at Elements. There is surely something for everyone. From vintage to modern, urban to country, their customers love the combination. Kathy first started putting vin- tage pieces in with the new prod- ucts to make interesting displays and build an eclectic style that she loves so much. "People always wanted my props, or vintage piec- es." Mixing it up is what keeps it fun and exciting for her. She feels that when you are decorating your space, it should show your person- ality and interests. She advises cus- tomers to "surround themselves with things and people they love. While no one can totally change out their decor for the latest trends each year, they can collect beauti- ful items made by creative and in- teresting people." Hilger said, "When Elements was started back in 2006, we did part home decor and gifts, and part custom picture framing. We have grown our framing over the years, and have added another person and a computerized mat cutter, and big- ger work area to handle larger cor- porate framing projects that we do. It's much easier to design fan- cy mats and multiple openings with the computer these days. The most fun we have in framing is hearing the stories that come along with the pieces that we frame. "The art, family photos, souve- nirs from vacations, military items, sports jerseys, concert posters and tickets all have a story to tell. Mem- ories made are preserved through framing. We take pride in working closely with our customers to pick just the right mat and frame. The best part is seeing the customer's elation when they pick up the fin- ished piece! " Elements is located just off the Jasper Square on the north side and is open Monday through Fri- day from 10 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Sat- urday hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. You can contact them at 812-634- 6017 or visit their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/elmentsjas- per. Employees at Elements are Jane Braun, Angela Hildenbrand and Barb Wendel. Kathy and Matt Hilger have two children, Amanda, 28, and Alex, 26.
