In second round match- es, Baugh won 6 -0 ; Dun- igan and McCain lost 6 -5; Llinkyn Knust and Bolin won 6 -5; Blackwell and Arnold won 6 -0 and Le- mond and Bailey lost 6 -5. It was the Chargers' fi- nal match of the year. "Our team showed a lot of improvement and got better with every match and practice," Pike Cen- tral coach Phil Knust said. "The biggest accomplish- ment for us this year was our sportsmanship on and off the court. We had re- ceived some compliments from a couple other teams on having good sports- manship and even though we had beaten them, we were respectful and how they enjoyed playing us compared to some other teams that have not been very respectful. "We have faced our fair share of teams also being disrespectful," he contin- ued. "But our players have handled themselves well, not acting the same way. With all the challenges we have had, whether it be having a couple play- ers stolen from our team from another sport or poor sportsmanship from other teams, we have got- ten stronger from this as a team." Pike Central 7th-grade volleyball drops a pair, 6th graders continue solid season By Dennis Marshall Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net The Pike Central sev- enth-grade volleyball team suffered a pair of losses this past week. The team lost 2-0 to Wood Memorial on Monday, Sept., 23, and 2-0 to Holy Trinity on Thursday, Sept. 26. Wood Memorial won 25 -12 and 25 -16. "It was a tough game against Wood Memorial," Pike Central seventh-grade coach Kinsey Barrett said. "The second set had some good moments where they tried to come back, but it just didn't pan out. Our lack of communication has been our downfall the last few games. Midseason always presents its own struggles and we are there right now. I'm glad to have a couple practices to work on serve receive and get the team back in their groove." The Chargers leaders were Eve Burns with two digs and an assist; Myra Hensler with three aces, two kills and two digs; Karly Morson an ace and a dig; Lakin Sorgius with two aces and nine digs; Bay- lie Rainey with two kills; and Riley Moore with an ace and a dig. Holy Trinity defeated Pike Central 25 -15, 2-24. "We may have lost to Holy Trinity, but I finally felt like these girls came out to play after some tough games," Barrett said. "Eve Burns and Izzy Luker really stepped up with their passing this game and covered the court well. Almost every time they get a good pass up, we set it and hit it over to get a kill. They have so much potential, they just need to come out to play as a team every single game. The girls were extremely hap- py that they overcame some of the struggles they've been hav- ing and I hope this gives them the confidence to win our last few games." The Chargers' leaders were Burns with five aces, five digs and three assists; Hensler with an ace, two kills and three digs; Morson with a kill and a dig; Sorgius with an ace, a kill and two digs; Izzy Luker with seven digs; and Rainey with three kills. Pike Central's B-Team also played a 10 -minute game. "They played really well," Barrett said. "Makynna Sat- terfield dominated the game serving with six aces. The team had some great passes all around that resulted in sev- eral kills for the team." See PCMS on 6
