B-2 Sports Wednesday, October 2, 2019 The Press-Dispatch Lady Chargers' soccer romps Vikings, falls to Titans and draws Tigers in sectional By Dennis Marshall Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net The Pike Central girls' soccer team earned a dominate 5 -1 win at North Posey (5 -10 -0) on Tuesday, Sept. 24. The Chargers (8 -5 -1) got an ear- ly goal four minutes into the match when Kennedy Willis scored off an as- sist from Chloe Roy. With 17 minutes to go in the first half, Roy was fouled in the box and con- verted a penalty kick. Then she scored on a corner kick with six minute go to in the first half. "She had a strike right into the goal," Pike Central head coach Chad Western said. "The second half, we played well also, but North Posey got an early goal just four minutes into the second half, and scored the PK." However, just two minutes later, Wil- lis was fouled in the box and Roy scored on another penalty kick with 34 min- utes left in the game. The Chargers scored their final goal with eight minutes remaining in the game when Shelby Vaughn scored a great free kick from about 20 yards out. "We played well," Western said. "Morgan Houchins, Adair Kabrick, Al- bany Ashley and Shelby Vaughn held down the middle for us." Roy finished the game with three goals and an assist. Willis had a goal and an assist, and Vaughn had a goal and two assists. Jenna Horrall made 14 saves in goal. Pike Central lost a heartbreaker in double overtime against Gibson South- ern (5 -7-2) on Thursday, Sept. 26. The Titans defeated the Chargers 1-0. Gib- son Southern's Maggie Rose scored the game-winning off a cross from Nicole Richter. "Gibson Southern was a good team," Western said. "We played defensive against them well, as they did also. It was an overall well-played match and we were happy getting some chanc- es and playing defense, and getting a counter once in a while." Pike Central had 15 total shots and 10 shots on goal. Horrall made 18 saves. The Chargers hosted Heritage Hills (13-1-0) on Tuesday, Oct. 1. Pike Cen- tral will be on the road at Evansville Christian School (3-6 -2) in its regular season finale on Thursday, Oct. 3. The IHSA A Sectional Pairing Show took place on Sunday, Sept. 29, and Pike Central found out it will face Princ- eton (4-7-3) in the opening round of the Sectional 30 Tournament at Jasper. The date and time of the match have not yet been determined. "Princeton is a good team that plays a pretty tough schedule," Western said. "They are better now than when we played them, and have girls back from injuries. It's hard to beat the same team twice. So, it's an okay draw, but not great. However, we are excited to start the tournament and show what we can do." GIRLS' SOCCER Pictured above is the 2019 Pike Central girls' soccer team.
